That's why you leave a little over a nickels thickness of 5200 between the planks and not butt them up. It's all encapselated in CPES which should also help minimize wood movement.

Ok so bottom just about completed finally. The one is of the 4 planks with 2 coats of CPES on them after fitting and drilling the screw holes. Once those are dry I can bed them in 5200 and begin the fairing once the 5200 is dry.

Great work, Bob! It looks so good, it looks like I did it.

Question: What happens when the wood swells? The planks could buckle. Dried 5200 has very little give to it. I always thoroughly soak the new planks and cover with thin plastic to hold the moisture while the wood swells and squeezes the 5200 out of the cracks.

Thanks! So far it hasn't been an issue. It gets pretty humid down here so there has been some expansion and shrinking already with no issues. Once I get it all faired in and 2 coats of CPES on it, it should be good to go, I think. Up to this point the moisture meter has been ready anywhere from 15 - 18%.

Love the smell of cpes in the morning.
Finally, Bob. Good to see you can find some time. Looks really great and you got over a hump that keeps you awake at night.
Belt sander or palm? If I remember...which is pretty hard for me...I used a belt sander with a medium grit to take down the 5200 seams and then the palm sander with maybe and 80 to fair and then 150 or 220 to finish up. If you commit to the bronze anti fouling bottom paint keep in mind that you will never be able to repaint (?) over that with any other paint unless you grind down to bare wood because any other paint you put over the anti foul will shed off. At least that's the experience I had.
Looking forward to more pics.

Thanks Cal! Yeah I'm thinking I'm going to use the 6" random orbit sander with 60 grit to bring it all close to fair, switch to 80 with it, then go to long board with 80 and 100 and see how it looks. I was debating on going original racing bronze but may be leaning to a a good 2 part poly matched to the bronze so it won't change over time. Jim West does it to all of his Restorations.

You sure Famowood is the way to go? I use Total Boat 2-part epoxy.

Yeah, that's what most of the club guys are using. Thin it some and it fills fine. It will be under 3 coats of 2000e and 3 coats of bottom paint.

Just curious....what does the hull weigh at this point? How are you carefully moving it? Turning it over? ...... always interested in others methods of work

Good question, I'm guessing probably around 700lbs maybe. She's probably going to be over 2000lbd once done with the engine in. Since I can not put the shear planks on I'm going to have to flip her a little differently.
I can't put the shear planks on because I need access to the inner batten that the upper deck frames will attach. Normally the upper frames would have been done already if built from scratch but I flipped first because I thought I only had to replace a couple of bottom planks. LOL
Anyway my plan is to basically build a "crate" around her and roll it on its side then top which will be the bottom down when done. I'll take lots of pics. I only have one gantry and by the time i make another, get the long pipe etc, to raise and roll it in slings, it will just be easier to crate and roll.

Who wudda thunk it would ever get this far. Great to see you back in the game. Fantastic job Bob. Flipping is a job best left to neighbors and beer, old tires and old mattresses. Just make sure you have the inside cross braced "X" with 2x4s. At this stage you sure don't want it to twist. I used sky hooks, pulleys, lawn chair cushions and ropes, sweat and prayers.
How many years now??

Yeah nine and counting. LOL. I'm actually going to build a "crate" around it to flip it. The inside bracing is actually all 2x4's, when they were cheap, so I'm going to fasten 2x4's across thd 2x4 uprights, then tie them fire and aft. Use 2x4's angled against the bottom to hold in place. I'll take a bunch of pics. I can't just roll it with the sheer planks not being on.

Thanks guys, yeah beer and pizza afterwards. :) Still a loy of work to do but she's getting closer. Now there's enough work to do inside so I can keep working even if it's raining outside. Still too packed into the 3 car to be able to cut frames and planks without using the driveway. :(

So I got the deck frames roughed out and the hooks steamed, clamped and drying. Once they're dry I'll CPES them and get them attached.

wow has it been that long since I put an update!?!?! Ok so I have been working on her just a lot of life evnts have been stalling progress. Anyway I got the hooks in but i had plane the port one a little too far and had to repalce it. then discovered I really should ahve made the sheer battens 1 3/4" vie 1 1/2" so now sheer battens it was. They're cut and resorcinoled to make 18 footers. Steamed and clamped them today.

You know it sat too long when the other boat cover ended up in there! LOL

Bob, I'm beginning to think this is going to end up being your retirement project.
Great work though. I'm thinking a soft office chair in your shop and a few drinkie poo's so you can sit and contemplate your next step so there no more ooopsies.

Thanks Cal. Wasn't sure if anyone was still following this thread at this piont. LOL Don't worry, the Admiral won't let it. I had said I can't finish it until I retire at this rate and she said I can't retire until it's finished.........................bit of a catch 22. :) Still working 10/11 hours days so it's weekends only and other things keep popping up. I'm getting there slowly but surely.

looks like you still had a couple of unused clamps left in the back, are you sure you couldnt have used them? You can never use too many clamps. Keep up the good work and take some vacation days to work on the boat lol.
