Got the chine blanks planed down and still able to get on the water again yesterday! Woo Hoo!

So out of the two 10/4 x 6 19" blanks I ended up with I was able to get two good chine blanks. Well one has a knot that needs to be routed out and filled with wood but it will work. I'm going to use the two bad ones as practice blanks for steaming. I'm also going to go with the bag steaming. After doing a little more research you use the 6mil drop cloth clear poly and iron it between parchment paper to seal it. I got a 10'x 25' for reasonable at Lowes and I'm going to make one just for the chines 10' long. I'll have plenty left to make custom bags for the planks that need it.

Smart move with the practice planks.
Hope it works out for you, good luck.
With any luck on my side I'll be on the water tomorrow.

Well I was able to get the steam tube made. Hope to try it in the next day or so.

Yeah there's a bit of a curve but I made it slightly oversize so it shouldn't be a problem. IF it is no big deal I have another 10' x 24' left over. ;)

Well got the steamer set up to try and steam the practice chine. It works!!!! The 6mil plastic tube worked like a charm. I was able to do I all by myself but I will need another hand or two when it comes time to do the real thing. I ran out of time when I got to frame 1, couldn't quite get it tight enough.

[img] [img]http://www.fiberglassics.com/media/kunena/attachments/legacy/images/Sream_pipetube.jpg

Now I can trim off a foot or so off the front end and use it to make a practice end to make sure it fits the stem correctly. Use it to shape the ends of the good chines then steam away!

That tube idea is great, you don't loose precious time carrying the board to get clamped, as its drying. And the best part is you can make the tube any size you want.

WOW !!!
Looks Great !
I’m glad it worked well.
How long did it take to steam ?
Was there a lot of spring back when you unclamped the chine to take the bag off ?

Chuck, two hours to steam, basic rule of thumb is an hour per 1" of thickness or 15 minutes per quarter inch of thickness. Not spring back as of yet since I steamed it while it was straight then bent it into place after sliding the bag off. I'll probably take the clamps off tonight and see how much it springs back. I'll leave the clamps of for at least two days when I do the real chines to make sure it's completely dry.

Well I said the heck with the 80hp for a little while. I will do what Bruce said and see what it looks like after some more lapping and blue test. BUT it was time to get back to the Resorter so I finished carving the chine ends yesterday and steamed them today. They're in Woo Hoo!!!!!!!!!!
Steaming on the starboard chine.

Starboard chine on and clamped. Admiral wasn't available to take pics on this side.

Port chine steaming.

Removing the bag.

Time to clamp.

Working on the stem clamping. It's the hardest part.

More stem clamping work.

Done. The Jorgessen clamp you saw on the starboard stem pic was to just hold it in place until the other chine was steamed and ready to clamp. The strap worked great.

Well you probably though I gave up. I didn't just a lot of life stuff keeps popping up. I've had to get the garage and house cleaned up to get ready to sell. Haven't even started on the boat shed. Have to get the boat in a condition to where I can load it on a trailer to move it. I

I got the batten blanks re-sawn and planed and cut to 1 1/2" in widths. I think if I get the chines in, bedded and bolted down and have the battens all in and bedded I should be able to lift the boat onto a trailer without torqueing it.....I hope.

You are doing an incredible job on your 18' Resorter. The photo with the chine looks like a work of art. Take your time and keep plugging away at it. It'll be in the water before you know it. Keep posting this wonderful thread.

Well mid 60's all weekend so I got more stuff done.

Got the chines bedded down and the 1x4's screwed down to rout the keel rabbets.

Fortunately/Unfortunately that's when I found out the frame 1 1/2 on the starboard side wasn't right so I had to take the screws out and get the Fein multi-tool, with the slicing blade, out and slice through the 5200 to make another short frame. Sorry no pics, too embarrassed. ;) Anyway it's got it's first coat of CPES on it and waiting for it's second one tomorrow.

I also was able to get all the kerf's cut into the battens. I should be able to resorcinol them tomorrow also I hope.

This is a close up of the kerf jig. I made a long tale so I could clamp the batten to the jig and a board so it all doesn't slide around.

Hey Greg, there already is a book-- or two -- but Bob could put a few addendums to them all :)
Nice progress Bob, you're spending more time making jigs that I probably spend redoing my whole Sabre. Looks beautiful.

That is awesome to see something old brought back to life again...It looks like you bought a boat so you would have the parts to make templates for new parts.

I don't feel near as bad after finding a rotten keel stringer and bulkhead in my CVX-20 now.

Bob,

Don't feel bad as anyone that has lived long enough has made these kind of buys only to find out they were in for a lot more than they had expected.

I bought a 1973 Corvette said to have been in mint condition and had it shipped 2500 miles...needs all new interior, sent it up for a cam, new manifold and carb to find out it had a low powder truck motor, no shocks, brushing and the list went on.

A 3 week job turned into 1.5 years it the shop.

Now everything that could be replaced, has been....next stop the interior shop.

So how do you make it snow inside your boat shed?

With one of these of course!

Keels roughed in, now on to the chines then route the plank beds.

ya bob, those power planers sure can make a lot of wood chips. I use one to clean up logs for furniture . headbords , coffee tables, end tables and so on. the boat looks better with every post you do. greg
