Hello everyone,
I have a new project for 2021, the restoration of a 1964 johnson Deluxe. This is a boat that has been abandoned by a guard professional for several decades. Initially the boat was not meant for me. The person who was originally going to take it decided to part with it. I had exchanged with him for information concerning his old American cockles that he wished to restore. Knowing me passionate about these boats and he finally having other restoration projects (old cars) he wanted to give me pleasure and what pleasure! I’m getting a Deluxe!!
I have to pick it up this weekend and take it back to a friend’s house to store it until I can make some room in my garden. The boat requires a complete restoration and for that I will of course doubting you take example on Agleason, and try to do as well as he . He did an exceptional restoration that I never tire of watching on the forum (I downloaded all the photos). I’m still going to have a hard time doing as well as he did!
The boat no longer has any equipment. There’s just the hull and the engine covers. No engine, no dashboard, no seats, no original steering wheel, so a big job. Fortunately the windscreen is still there and the glass has been removed to avoid a breakage problem. I activated my network in France and I already have some tracks for some parts. I have old Evinrude rogue seats. I normally found an original steering wheel and the dash console. Not having the boat yet I will not fail to make the list of missing parts.
For the engine I don’t know yet if I come back to the origin with an old OMC 120 or 155 hp or if I opt for a newer mercruiser 140hp or v6 4,3l engine. Finance will decide...
For the moment I have only these two photos to send you. As soon as I have others I will post them.
See you soon.

Hello, to take care a little before starting the hull I repair the trunk of the engine which is in poor condition. Some big cracks and the bottom of the trunk in 3 pieces.

Restoring the steering wheel of my Deluxe.
It was really damaged and burned by the sun since it was abandoned. The boat has been dry for more than 30 years !
I had to first remove the tape that was on and melted, then I had to fill all the cracks made by the sun with mastic and then I sanded and painted it. the result is not perfect as Agleason but it still remains in better condition than at the start.

Great work! Want a job? By the way, I have a dash board and dash panel and port and starboard red/green lenses if you need them.

I'm doing a resto-mod on a Dual Deluxe and repowering with OMC 120s using GM exhaust manifolds and risers.

Perfection is a l o n g stretch, Bob. I'm making a lot of this stuff up as I go along. Right now, it's a 17' paper weight. I assume it will float, probably steer, possibly run and hopefully won't self-destruct during sea trials. I'll be running 26 wires from the engines to the dash panel. If I can get better than half the things working properly, I'll proclaim victory, have a beer and take the rest of the day off! Here'a shot of the starboard engine terminal blocks. Wish me luck!

If I want a job..... I’d like to but I can’t leave mine and i live in France :) . This is a job I would like to do but my free time allows me to practice this work for fun.
Thank you for your proposal for the dashboard and the starboard red/green lenses. I may have to get a dashboard, but I’m not sure, but I’m interested for the lenses.
I have not yet begun the restoration of the hull. Maybe this summer but the boat is not at home which is not practical . For now I am finishing my johnson reveler. I have to try it next week. I look forward to it.

Do not hesitate to put more picture of your restomod. it will help me for mine

You should give serious thought to converting the outdrive bellows to the newer "square" style:
nuwavemarine.com/sierra-transom-seal-omc-909527-18-2768/
These bellows are not cheap but they are available and brand new. The round bellows are absolutely impossible to find, even used ones. I had to go with the round ones because two engines didn't leave enough room.

The one I have has none. It’s not the same model as yours. I guess it’s not the original one, or depending on the years of production they weren’t identical.
It seems to me that you reshaped the striations with a small saw blade?

Hello, some small work started today. Disassembly of the boat parts.
the rest of the dashboard, the rest of the windshield (frame), tank support, what remains of the reinforcements of the rear panel....
Many aluminum parts are oxidized, the rusted screws had to be cut as impossible to disassemble. Restoration work in perspective.
The floor and foam are full of water and the hull will require a big job.

Hello, there are 2 types of steering wheel on the deluxe. Which model for which date? 1962-63 for glitter and 1964-65 for white gray?

Nobody knows then if the models of the steering wheels vary according to the years.........?
Today, I received from a friend the dashboard. It also restores a deluxe. It is a little distorted but I will make it beautiful!

That is one beautiful boat.
I see you have the original round boots between the transom and outdrive. I haven't been able to locate that part, where did you find them. I would greatly appreciate the information.
Thanks

It’s very difficult to find. I don’t think they’re manufactured anymore. The only ones that can be found are opportunities or ends of stock or from individuals. I have 2 for my reveler but for the deluxe I will probably pass on the more recent model if I mount an old omc engine !

I put "OMC 12 hole transom" in an Ebay search and saved it. After about a year, an NOS one turned up for $125...I bought it and considered myself lucky. After that, another one turned up...good used. Bought that one for about $50 I think.

I suppose you could buy the "square" one with 16 holes, carefully cut it round and then punch your own holes but I've never tried it.
