TOPIC: Any advice?

Any advice? 14 years 4 months ago #1777

Sunday I'll be going to look at a....woody. Odd I know but it sounds mighty interesting. Ostensibly complete - Utility - inboard of some sort - molded plywood - top deck is delaminating some.
Is there any advice...Common Wisdom...that I should have before going in?

Bring a scratch awl or ice pick to poke around. Screw drivers to remove floor boards to look under 'em. Flashlight.

Look for discolouration around fasteners which can be a sign of decay or corrosion of the fasteners. Knock on the wood (literally) to listen for the sound. Good wood and decayed wood sound very differently. Poke the wood. If the pointy device easily penetrates the wood, it may indicate a problem.

Check the trueness of the hull. Is it twisted, hogged, warped?

Lots of the same approaches as looking at a classic 'glass boat.

Good luck!

Thanks Andreas,

This will be a new adventure. A woody came my way a couple years ago but I didn't look at it a keeper. I looked at it as a trailer and a motor with some wood attached to it.

Good advice - I'll take my Awl :~)
