I bought myself a little 1941 Chris Craft runabout. I figured it was way past time to own a wooden boat that actually runs! It's turn-key, a show winner and needs nothing! Should be a lot of fun. I pick it up at the show in Mt. Dora next month. Maybe I should stuff a big block Chevy in her. (?)

very good looking boat. may be a silly question but is owning a wooden boat a lot more work? Having worked in the wood working industry I know that no matter what you seal it with you will get a bit of shrinkage or swelling with moisture. (at least the woods I have worked with) I imagine owning a wooden boat you would have to have the time to frequent the lake to keep her water tight. Or am I overthinking it?

Allison? I should be so lucky. No, it's an American-LaFrance V12, 1947. They were derived from the old Auburn V12s. I have a home for it, a 1954 Chris-Craft Riviera 20...if I ever get the time to fool with it.

I guess it would be kind of a tight fit anyway.
 Also, owning a wood boat becomes more of a hobby than a chore. That being said, all of the comments and admiration you get from onlookers makes all of the work worth while. |

Well, if the boat receives favorable comments, that's fine. I'm just tired of standing on shore watching restored wooden boats cruising around and me telling other bystanders all about the one I'm working on...always working on! Now I'm finally back in the game.

Have seen that boat before. Of course I live by Mt. Dora and boat on the chain all the time anyway.
Will be at the show as well all weekend long. Lesa and I will have one or two boats on display down at the outboard end of the show. Come on down and say hello if you like. |

While I was at the show, I ran across a 1948 Century Resorter I really liked but it was "sold." I gave the lady my card just in case. Turns out the guy was a deadbeat. The lady called me three days later and I bought it. Now all I have to do is drive all the way back down to Mt. Dora again to get it.
Hey Bob...want to meet me there and take her on a cruise through the river?

...and ANOTHER one: 1959 Century Resorter, beautiful inside and out but with a cracked block, 283 Chevy...got it cheap. It's kind of a rare bird...has a factory original gas pedal. I just happen to have a new high performance 350 sitting on a cradle in the shop. "Chance favors the prepared mind."

I'll have to get rid of the air scoop with the built-in flame arrestor...but it does look good! The operating range is right around 4,600 RPM. I'll be turning a 13X14 wheel.
I'm building another engine for a client...SBC with dual #1409s, progressive linkage. It should pass everything but a gas pump. |

Agreed the scoop looks awesome but alas it won't fit. The 4600 sounds about right. I think mine will be somewhere around there. Not sure on the prop yet. Was thinking of calling ACME and see what they suggest.

I don't have any experience with the Carter AFB line of carburetors. In dual quad configuration, that should be quite a show piece. Wonder how well it will climb out of the hole......

I can't read the name on them but I believe they are vintage Edelbrock manifolds. The one I'm building now will be using vintage Nicson manifolds. These types of vintage aluminum manifolds for a small block Chevys are getting harder to find but I have an Ebay search saved for them. You can find them easily for big blocks and Oldsmobiles but the small blocks are really scarce and they need to be good ones...even harder to locate.
These types of manifolds have two 3/8" female pipe openings in the front. The water goes in at the lower fitting, fills the manifold and exits through the top fitting which is then plumbed (in this case with 5/8" aluminum tubing) to the exit fitting and out the exhaust. They were made by Glenwood, Nicson, Edelbrock and Hardin...probably some others as well. They're not cheap but generally can be had for the cost of new cast iron manifolds with risers. Ford 351W with old Interceptor exhaust manifolds:

Thanks for the information and pictures. I'm accustomed to the hulking cast iron manifolds. I did a quick search to find some more information. There's a site called 2040-parts.com you might consider giving a look. There are some SBC Edelbrock pieces you might find interesting and at a good value.
