Ok how does one change a tire and rim on a wheel with no lug nuts?

I just bought a 14' Starcraft Alum with a Sears Trailer from 1969.
Model is hard to read, but I think it is 571-616440 ?
I towed it home 30 miles, and the hubs were cool to the touch, but I want to go over everything before I take it on the road again.
Thanks all!

Gee, this is a great example where a photo would be REAL helpful.

No lug nuts, no lug bolts? Then how about a hub cap?

Jim, some of the older trailers used a wheel that had the hub assy made into the wheel. IE: remove the axle nut to take the wheel off. If it were me, I'd mic (mike) the axle and get a set of regular hubs and wheels to fit it.

Congrats on the new Starcraft BTW, can't wait to see some pics buddy!

Well the boat is just a regular open row boat, not any classic runabout or anything. Just a beater for the beach house. But I will need to tow this thing to NJ about 180 miles this coming spring.

There must be something behind the bearing protector.

It did come with a decent 1979 Evinrude 9.9, but sadly it is a long shaft.

Re:Tire change? 14 years 3 months ago #14841

Only way you're gonna change the tire is to take the hub cap off Jim. I can't tell you for sure what's behind there, but I bet it's a nut held in place by a cotter pin. Remove the cotter pin, remove the nut and pull the wheel off. It may come with the hub I would expect. No better time to check bearings, maybe do a bit of simple hub maintenance!

Thanks guys, I may have to go with Mark's suggestion, as there is no spare.
Another weekend project.

Re:Tire change? 14 years 3 months ago #14869

Do you have a micrometer Jim? If so, removing a wheel and miking the axle should take less than a half hour. Remove the hub cap, pull the cotter pin, remove or loosen the axle nut, then jack that side of the trailer up and pull the hub off and measure the bearing surface of the axle. If it's 1", it's easy to find replacement hubs. NAPA carries them for instance.

Good luck!

I have calipers. I also have a Tractor Supply Co. in town.
If changing one of these isn't bad, maybe I could find a third rim on ebay. I just don't know what this type of rim is called.
Thanks again.

This is just a shot in the dark, but it looks like a small tractor wheel. There somewhat commonly made like that (the smaller ones).

Does the tire have a size on it?

Rubber appears new.
4.80-8 Tow-Master
I may luck out. I saved the trailer tires and rims from my other trailer which looks identical to this one. Weekend job for sure.
Thanks again.

Boy, that would be great if they're the same Jim. 4.80 X 8 is a normal trailer tire size, so you shouldn't have any problems.

The shaft measures .750 and the inner is 1.125.

You were right, it was like removing a prop nut.

Only problem is it is basically a rim/hub all in one. Bearings were in there.
Inners seals were shot and some water in there.
Off to Tractor Supply Co. to see if there can help.

I don't have a catalog here Jim, but I bet NAPA has a kit for that axle. Keep us posted with what you find.

Good luck!

I may have to actually walk into a Napa. Napa online doesn't help. 3/4" is rare.
Etrailer.com has the entire wheel with tire, but at $70 ea.? Ouch.
Even they list the bearing for that assy. as 3/4" bearings, but they don't seem to sell them.
I really only need the seals, as the bearings appear OK. Again they seem to be a rare size. OD is about 1 3/4" and the ID is 1 1/8" Looks like the seal goes over the larger part of the axle.

Re:Tire change? 14 years 3 months ago #15102

I worked in parts for a long time, and if I still was and you brought me in that seal, you'd walk out the door with two. And yes, the seal goes over that larger machined surface and the back of the axle bearing surface. I might be able to find a NAPA kit for you, or at least a seal, but I'd have to call my old store tomorrow and see if my buddy could figure it out. He's been in the parts business decades and I bet he could. If he can find a kit, it will have the NAPA seal number on the package, which might make finding just the seals easier. Seals are easy to interchange and widely available.

The bearings are 3/4" i.d. and 1.125" o.d.?

The seal is 1 1/8" i.d. and 1 3/4" o.d.? How deep is it? 1/4", 3/16"?

Bearings are OD 1 1/2" ID=3/4"
Seals are 1/2" thick.

I just talked to a nice girl at etrailer.com
Apparently around 1980 everything was standardized.
3/4" wasn't part of that standardization.

She said an option was to change out the spindle, and that depending on the axle...
I stopped her there, because there is no axle. Only the spindle sort of crimped into the u channel of the frame.
Maybe this trailer isn't even safe?

These guys have the wheels though?

Re:Tire change? 14 years 3 months ago #15109

Etrailer might have stopped stocking trailer parts before 1980 but I'll bet NAPA didn't. I'll check on that tomorrow after 9 a.m.

Don't worry too much about the trailer Jim. Basically you need a tongue that connects to an axle. Everything else is a detail. If the rest of the trailer is fine, axles are cheap: www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200330477_200330477 . Of course, then you would need regular trailer 4 bolt or 5 bolt hubs (and wheels). I bet the axle is fine though. How's the tread on the tires? Worn off in strange places, odd in anyway?

I love fooling around with old trailers. I have a '72 Sylvan (no longer made) that I had a heck of a time finding seals for at NAPA, but did, and everything else was no problem from NAPA. I bet this old trailer of yours will be fine once we locate some parts. I wish I could see it in person.

Jim, I feel sure you can come up with some seals, sounds like Frank is on it for ya! The bearings should also be available, you may have to carry them into a NAPA or get the numbers off your old ones, whatever it takes. My question to you is: is the trailer structurally sound? The last pic you posted looks like a hole may be rusted through the frame? (Maybe just the angle of the pic, but need to check that out!) If it's in good shape, I'd consider going this route:
www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/NTESearch?storeId=6970&N=0&Ntk=All&Ntt=trailer+axle&Nty=1&D=trailer+axle&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Dx=mode+matchallpartial
You can buy a new axle assy with springs, mounts, & hubs for just a little more than a couple of those wheels! Then you'll be up to date, and safe. ;) Just my two cents...

You're good. How did you find those?
I searched and searched.
Thanks a bunch.

Just ordered, and they are in PA, so they are close.

Magic.

redtrailers.com They carry all sorts of neat trailer stuff, good folks.

Mark is correct. Bring old bearings and seals into NAPA and they'll match 'em up. Bearings should have #s on them pretty easy to read. I hope that kit is the right one, it looked good from what you describe.

I hope it works out good for you.

Frank,
Looks good. Parts arrived today.
I don't think I'll punch out the races, but the biggie was the seals were correct. Bearings look the same also. They sent too many bearing protectors (4), why they sent any I don't know.

Re:Tire change? 14 years 3 months ago #15413

If the races are blemish free Jim, no problem. I'm just cheap enough I always replace them. Got new stuff, wanna use it!

Pack those new bearings real well. Good thing those seals are the correct ones! Make sure that the larger bearing surface they seal on is smooth and blemish free. If it isn't take some fine emory cloth and gently smooth it. If it's rough in any way, the seal will wear out a lot quicker.

Good luck with it!

How do you get those races out. They seem to be in there really tight. What do you use to pound them out?

The only thing I ever use is a large 1/2" diameter BRASS punch and 2# Hammer.
Catch the inner lip- and work your way around in 45-degree increments.. once it breaks free- you can do 180's

I make a race-install-tool by cutting a slot (at a 30-degree angle)in the old race with a 4 1/2" grinder with a cut-off wheel. Then heat the whole (old)race red-hot (let cool naturally) to remove it's temper so it doesn't shatter when you bang on it.
You can use it to drive in the new race. It can easily be removed using pliars in a twisting motion

Check out my 1st post in this thread. There are plenty of pics, and an explanation.

Keep in mind everybody has there own way. This is just my way, been doing it for years.

You guys rock! I used a little of both methods. Races are out.
It's our aniversary so a little project on my wife's bathroom side-tracked me, but now it is up to her to finish the bathroom mini makeover.

69fab, do you cut all the way through the old race?
Sort of making a spring. Then to remove you are pulling the pliers apart instead of squeezing?
I think I get it?

Yes, cut all the way through.
When you seat the new race, there should still be some of the old race above the level of the hub. You can just grab that with the pliars... give it a twist, and the old race will come right out. The slot allows it to compress a little and not be so tight.

That is a good idea.
I should do it next time.
I finished. It took me 4 hours. There was a lot of water in the second one.
Good clue your inner seal is no good?
Inside of the rim is filthy.
I guess these were water cooled hubs.
Thanks all!

Re:Tire change? 14 years 3 months ago #15764

Hi,
This may be too little, too late, but my family's marine business has always felt that we are most of the time very competitive. I am just now reading this post, but if we do not have the 3/4" bearing sets on hand, we should be able to supply the same components at a very significant savings, if we can receive them with a larger order to control shipping charges.
Additionally, we have a used wheel @ $14.99 (a new bearing set would additional). The inside diameter should be checked to ensure it's fitment with 3/4" bearings if you should have an interest in it for a spare rim. The existing tire is pretty old, and would best be replaced for any distance traveled however (we likely can supply a new tire if wanted as well - I can best quote this during the business week).
Good luck with your "new" boat outfit!

Regards,
Joe
