TOPIC: Anyone heard of this boat...Carlson Exel Micro

Anyone heard of this boat...Carlson Exel Micro 8 years 1 month ago #128717

Just picked up this mini boat with the plate Carlson Exel Micro

Not sure of the year although the color scheme screams late 80's early 90s. Motor is 92 so I assume the boat is similar.\

I cannot find any info on these boats at all!! Anything would be helpful.

This is what was generically called a "thrill craft". They were made in the 70's and early 80's and were the predecessor to the Jetski and other PWCs. A hand full of companies made them. The most well known was the Cougar Cat by Mercury Marine. Even Disney had their own model and ran them at a small lake at Disney World. They were limited by law to 40 HP but even with only 40 they went like a scalded cat. I ran a Cougar Cat at Mercury's racing facility in Oshkosh, and it was a lot of fun but really scary.

To have 40 HP the rules were, 13 feet in length or less, 2 persons max, remote steering (a wheel) and they had to run through a test course. The course was in the law and if they couldn't get through it without doing something crazy like flipping or spinning out, then they had to lower the HP rating. But even with 35 they were pretty wild.

I haven't heard of this model but Carlson is a pretty famous builder and they made a lot of different models back then.

By the way, there should be a Hull Identification Number on the outside of the transom, in the upper right hand corner. With that I can identify who made it and what model year it is.
