Hey all, simple question for those with stern drive knowledge. I overheated a 350 Buick V8 in a Fabuglas Triton 220 on the weekend. I haven't trouble shot for engine damage but was wondering how that could of happened? I was in a no wake zone idling around when it heated up. By the time I noticed the temp gauge was at 230 and there was a blow by smoke trail. It ran fine after cooling but when I checked the block it didn't seem to have any water in it. Any ideas would be helpful. Is there a water pump in the stern drive or just the engine?

Thanks always

Dan

Depends on the outdrive. My Volvo Penta had the pump run off the engine belt, to the block, then the circulation pump through and out the risers. The block should have water in it regardless.

Most sterndrives have 2 pumps.
One in the drive to lift raw seawater to the engine and a circulation pump on the engine itself.--The circulation pump on the engine is often different from the automotive equivalent.
Water pumps in the drive are often / should be replaced when they are still working well.

That's the info I was looking for (I think). Because the block was empty I suspect there is a water feed issue. The Buick water pump on the350 is likely not the issue but I was unsure about a feed pump in the stern drive. Any idea how I can test it with the boat on the trailer? Now if I can find a 1969 stern drive manual.......think it's OMC........I think?
Thank you very much.

Dunno much if anything about OMC outdrives. I had a Volvo Penta 280, no water pump in the the leg, only the one run off the engine.
