TOPIC: Viking Marine Mfg. Azuza, Ca.

Viking Marine Mfg. Azuza, Ca. 7 years 11 months ago #129289

I own a pre 1960 boat built by Viking in Azuza , Ca. It is 8 ft long and 5 ft wide. Model SD.
I think it was built in 1958 or 1959. They were running them on the ocean with the old 60 hp
Mercury on them. Excellent shape. What do I have ? I live in Iowa

What do you have?
A bizarre boat for sure. They ran them in big water with that much power?
We need more pictures for sure!!!!

That is a odd looking little boat for sure.....You should post up more pics of the interior and closer shots. I know the Brit's have a Almarine Seafire that they use in the ocean with 40 HP O/B or the Meteor has a 2 Cylinder Rotax jet drive. Those little boat are 9.5 feet and barely seat two comfortably.

The bottom reminds me of those Fliver boats that were open hull with chambered floatation...short with 15-30hp outboards that Ski shows used to use Clown acts for. You could swamp them and they do not sink.

As far as the name Viking - I remember seeing a short boat about 12' V-bottom 2 seater at a dealer in the early 70's that was metal flake blue/purple that looked similar to the small checkmate and said Viking on it. I never saw another one...I was only a teenager, but thought it was the coolest and rated for 50hp. I have no idea if this could even be the same company.

You have one crazy cool boat there!!

Our Library section has information on the Viking Supercat, but nothing on the miniboat version.

Just to confirm that there is a ID mfg. plate on the boat. Viking Marine Mfg. Azuza, Ca. Model. SD.
Then the serial number . The man that bought it in 1959 and brought it to Iowa also ran it on the Gulf of Mexico near Tampa in the early 1960's From late 60's until I found it in 1989 it was in his garage.

Thanks for the help. We will have to do some more digging.

I have these in my files as "Viking 10 footer" - I think I got them from ebay years ago. They look like what you're describing:

I think perhaps that is it...sure fits my old memories. What boating kid wouldn't want one. I am thinking they were asking around $1,500 new with trailer and no motor...but really can't be for sure since it was over 40 years ago.

Thanks for sharing those pictures. I have not seen this boat until your post.

I found out today from the Azuza city halll the Viking Marine mfg. inc opened in 1959 and was auctioned out
Of business in 1962. Their cat boat came out in 1960. My boat was built the year before"I think"
The son of the man who bought the boat in Azuza is going to call me to shed some light on the purchase.

I talked to the buyer of the boat. They bought in winter of 1959-1960. The name of the boat was Super Dink
Thus the model on the ID plate SD. Has anyone heard of it. Do I have something of value?
