We heat the house with three heat pumps for a total of 9,000 BTUs and you're right, it ain't cheap and winter sucks. Fortunately, I can heat the shop with a wood stove. It got up to 86 in there on Saturday. We needed the heat to paint the Donzi.

The price of propane is unbelievable! Luckily I have natural gas, which is cheap in comparison, plus 2 wood stoves. I couldn't imagine what you guys up north are dealing with...

My friend in the UP Mich is paying 5.39 with a 100 gal. limit.
He has Eden Pure heaters. It seems electricity is cheaper?
he had a locked in price of 2.89. But that is void due to the shortage.
We have natural gas here in central Mich. Some areas around here are not so lucky.

I used to heat with it when it was cheap years ago. My furnace went and decided to get a new propane one. I swear it was not hooked up and the price started to skyrocket. I was landlocked where I could not get natural gas with less than a 3,000 foot line over someone else s property. I put in a wood pellet stove and I love it. Check into it. The heat is economical. It helps a lot.

Right now, my shop is being heated by a 1956 Chris Craft utility. It was way beyond the point of economical restoration so since it had to be disposed of anyway, I decided to make it useful one more time.

Most people here in SW New Mexico use Propane. I'm lucky, I have natural gas but seldom use it. The old woodburner warms the place pretty good and a winter's supply of decent firewood, 1 cord, runs about $200. I understand they're trucking LP all the way from here to the northeast to meet the demand, so I guess that would account for some of the increased cost.

We just refilled the big propane tank at the shop. $3125.00 with tax. I will now be working with the thermostat turned way down. We have in floor heating at the shop so it is not too bad. The boss was keeping it warmer in there just to keep me comfortable. I told him to turn it down just to save some cash. He didn't know that the price had gone up so high. Skip.

How I heat my garage...

I was in the process of installing it here. It has double blowers and large fire box. It is an old heater that was originally in a coal fireplace, the tall shallow kind.

We have 'metered' propane service from our local utility, they fill the tank and bill us for just what we use. Two months ago was the first time we used it- And it cost us $350 to heat the house for a month... I turned the furnace off and bought electric heaters, and saved $120 a month, paying for the heaters in the first month. The furnace in this house has propane-only heat, rather than a heat pump, which would be a lot more efficient and cost effective here since our power is so cheap.

Dodged this bullet. Just got my bill from the farm in MN. My brother-in-law had the tank refilled on 1/9. I've been waiting for the bill ever since, dreading what might be. It came today at $2.00. :)

Shelby, Good move. I'm metered natural and guess what....all of a sudden there is a shortage. Go figure. Lucky the utility company cannot just raise prices on a whim. We have a utility board that must approve every rate hike and it has to go through lots of red tape.

The trick with propane is to buy the tank instead of lease it. I bought a 350 gallon tank for around $1200. That dropped the price from $4.60 per gallon to $1.89 per gallon. Figure my return on investment is under 2 fill ups.
