TOPIC: 1967 MFG Corvette CV 15

1967 MFG Corvette CV 15 10 years 3 months ago #100281

I'll be receiving this boat as payment for some work I'm doing on another boat for a friend. It's in typically rough shape for an old fiberglass boat that's been neglected and left exposed to the elements.

The decking is mulch and the foam is saturated:

What used to be good glass cloth can now be torn apart by hand.

... and the decking can be dug out by hand too!

The motor mount bolts are sunk into the transom "mulch":

The adhesive resin that holds the cap on is in bad shape:

... and someone has attempted to "repair" it at sometime in it's life:

There's a pretty good "whoop-de-do" in the cap and rub rail at that repair on the port side:

There's also nasty old flaking paint and cracked gel coat:

The good parts are:

The dash and steering wheel are in decent shape and I think they can be restored and saved:

The original fuel tank is in very good shape:

The motor is a '67 Merc 650 that cranks easy and idles well. The LU lube was dark but not milky, so that's a plus. The trailer looks to be pretty solid and probably just needs the typical reworking.

I plan to bring this old girl back to life and make her beautiful again... not to original factory, but designed to fit my own tastes and needs while keeping as much of the vintage look as possible.

Got a decent pic of the manufacturers tag on the inside of the transom yesterday:

The tag says 60 hp max, but the boat has a '67 Merc 650 (65 hp) on it that I'm pretty sure is original. I guess they didn't worry too much about 5 hp over the max back then, and I'm not going to worry about it either.

An interesting note is this boat was also offered with an 80 hp inboard in '67 and '68. I guess the difference in the engine hp's is the weight hanging off the transom for an outboard.

Also note that the tag states the boat provides floatation, pretty good for back then since it wasn't even required... but it does mean lots of nasty/rotten floatation foam to dig out, where's my shovel?
