Hoping someone can give me tips on how to put back together the control box of a 1960 Merc Kiekhaefer pictured below. All the components are together I just cant marry the two halfs together. Spend 3 hours until midnight last night trying.

Thanks Dave for letting me call you and talk it over :) Really appreciate it! Spent a little more time looking at it then started to think, does the shifter arm have to come off so that the gears that I circled in this picture be married to the other half instead of the half that it is in the picture? If so, do I have to take the aluminium Keikhaefer emblem off first?

I took mine apart when I first got my boat and boy what a mistake that was. It was working fine,
just a little stiff so I thought I would lubricate it. All the guts popped out.took me weeks to ge it back together. Ugh...ron

Thanks of ton Dave for giving me a follow up call. Really really appreciate it. So yes, the problem was that I needed to pull the gears (I circled in red on my previous post) and install them on the other half before putting it back together. Once I was able to knock out the shifter/throttle arm I was able to pull those gears and move them to the other half. I could see the markings on the cable gears (the straight ones) but there was nothing to match/reference on the other gears (curved ones)so it was trial and error. The first picture shows the one half which I didn't mess around with the gears, so I assume those are in the correct position. The second picture is how I replaced the gear that I messed around with. Hopefully that is correct.
So....It was time to test it. After only a few cranks...it started!
Gas leak fixed...Check :)
Wiring fixed....Check :)
Starter fixed....Check :)
LU gear leak fixed...need a little more work there
Tell-tail......need a little more work there :S
Here is a video of it running.

Thanks for all your help...still a long way to go!

Hello Mercooper,

That thing is a bear to get back together. Did it twice and struggled each time. First time I took it apart was to replace the wiring and then again to paint. The Mercury service manual has good instructions on lining everything up properly before putting the halves together again.

To pull the lever off the emblem must be removed. Unfortunately I was not successful in removing it with out destroying it. I was able to find a decent replica from a guy up in Canada
