TOPIC: Gasket replacement - sealing compound or not

Hi All,
I've torn down my 1960 Merc 350.I bought new gaskets for between the mid-section and lower cowling and for between the lower cowling and the engine block. I was about to put it back together when I remembered (maybe incorrectly) that someone said not to use a gasket sealing compound. What is the general rule for this? (use a sealing compound or not)? If the answer is to use it, what kind is recommended?

I wet them down with grease and then you can reuse them over and over again.

I too applied a very light coating of grease.

Always dry, if the surfaces are clean, smooth and prepped correctly you do not need sealer. Grease can cause the gasket to squeeze out on installation and no amount of tightening will stop the leaking, and could actually make it worse. This is especially true for cork, or silicone impregnated gaskets.

I use OMC "gasket sealing compound" of Mercury "perfect seal". Both essentially the same stuff. In a can with a brush. Great stuff. Sees use on cars too.

well now I know. Knowing me, I'll find a reason to take it all apart again this winter
