TOPIC: mercontrol removal

mercontrol removal 14 years 6 months ago #7779

I need some help removing a mercontrol.I already removed the set screw that holds the handle but when i tried to pull the handle off it slid out about an inch and something else is holding it.Do I need to remove the button in the middle of the handle first? If so how?I removed a plug on the back directly behind the button and the plug and a spring came out but it didn't help.any help would be appreciated

Black button unscrews, loosen set screw, then lever will come off.
I have a 66 950SS too! but with standard control box, not the hidden one.

Yes, the black button unscrews on the early MerControls. Later ones snap on and require a small screwdriver to pop them loose.

The set screw needs to be loosened which you did.
