I'm new to this Merc thing, spent most of my life with Evins and Johns. Last month I picked up a 59 Herters that I'm working on and it had a '59 Merc Mark 58AE hanging on the back. I took the engine off by lifting by hand and setting it on a roller cart and there she sits under my workbench until the boat is finished. Problem I asked myself about is how do you lift these things back on the boat? The Evinjohns have nice lifiting rings and rods built in that I just hook my chainfall on and go to work. Didn't see anything like that on the Merc. The only solution I see is running a lifting strap around it to latch on to.

2 person grab the rear rail with one hand the other hand under the shock.
with a crane or hoist rope tied to the rear corner rail and go to the steering conector. makes a triangle over the top.

I snaked a single piece rope through the rail in the front and the rear of the motor and hooked it to my winch. I had to lift the motor out of a crate and this arrangement allowed the rope to slide through the rail so no adjustment was necessary as i lifted it to vertical.

Up to 1964 you can list it like shown. Starting in 1965 the lower cowl is not actually attached to the midsection. It is actually floating. Not recommended lifting the 1965 and newer motor like this using the bottom cowl. Puts a lot of stress on the cowling framework.

Nice white merc!
