1960s 100HP Mercury O/B motor for sale or trade. this motor came off a boat I bought but I am not using as I want a smaller motor. the PO said it ran but I did not test it but its not locked up so maybe. comes with controls and wiring also and sold as is. Email or call Alan at xxx-xxx-xxxx(cell) if you would lik to see or buy it thanks. (Very reasonable asking price)

YOU DIDNT BUY IT YET ? I would buy that if it was close enough to pick up. I see the distributors sell on ebay for that much. Lower unit goes for about 2 to 3 hundred bucks. Carbs,trim parts, etc. its a money maker if it dosent run. If it does run its worth 4 to 5 hundred bucks easy. I just sold a bare block for a hundred bucks. Wish I could get it.

Guess who's back in the "Tower of Power" club?! I went to look at it, liked what I saw. Came with cables and controls, and he threw in the stand it was sitting on too. And of course Precious, the boat cat, had to check it out too....

It looks like a 62-63 850 or 1000

PLUS!! you got the last generation mid 1980's swept skeg lower unit. It does not look correct on this motor but it is the most valuable one.

If you part it out that lowr unit will bring better money than the older ones.

Thanks guys, I'm hoping she's a runner. (Compression test coming as soon as the heater gets the garage warm enough!) The serial number indicates a 63 model, 162xxxx. The front plate and wrap say 1000, & 100HP. You can also barely make out the Full Gear Shift decals on the DSH side covers just under the bottom cowl. There's still a Kiekhaefer seal on the block, but who knows what the old girl has been thru!? I didn't think the skeg looked right Conrad, but my knowledge is very limited here. Looks to me like later model controls too. Tiger?

Cool! The lower unit is just fine, just not period correct. I think what you got is a better lower unit IMO. Yes the controls are from late 70's early 80's Id guess.

Congrats on your score! It looks pretty sanitary inside, and may have been maintained by a "real" mechanic!

The lower unit dates from '79 or newer and will have a stainless steel driveshaft, definitely a plus.

It does take some skill and ingenuity to adapt a later lower unit to the older-style motor; you have to shorten the shift shaft (or swap new for old), and modifiy the reverse lockout cams & plastic spacer. Otherwise the reverse latch mechanism won't work right.

The last issue you'd see with this setup is that the newer driveshaft won't have an O-ring groove to seal the crank/driveshaft splines. If you plan on keeping this motor and leaving the later-style lower unit, it'd be best to grind an O-ring groove. This'll keep the splines from seizing or rotting away.

Of course that's getting ahead of things, compression check will tell you if it's worth messing with further.

Either way, parted-out or running, you've got a money-maker on your hands!

Thanks guys, I appreciate the info. S/S driveshaft IS a good thing, I remember what the one in my 62 700 FGS looked like, pretty rusty and pitted. Do you happen to know the measurement on how far down the shaft the o-ring groove should be? (Obviously, just at where the power head coupling stops, right.)

The starter spins fine, but the drive isn't kicking up to engage the flywheel. Guess I'll have to pull the starter and take it to the shop. Compression check on hold temporarily. The cable from the plug on the motor to the positive battery terminal had split insulation, and is corroded beyond belief, so I'm jumping straight to the starter.

Spark plugs looked pretty good, and he was running NGK B7S. Piston tops didn't look terribly fouled either, so I'm "guardedly optimistic" at this point.

Well it was just a bit more then I paid for my 1150
The motor was free, however I had to buy lunch for 4 (5 counting me) hungry guys as to get it out of the back shed (ground was too wet to drive on)...bill came to 80+ and then tip..near $100

But it runs....now to find a 72 model boat to put it on

Yes Tiger Means 90 Cubes and 93 cubes.

Tiger is written on all 90 and 93 cube motors.

The 90 cubers are the 850, 900, 950, 1000

The only 93 cube motor is the 66-67 1100

After that the 1968 99 cube 1250 said typhoon on the side.

Its good to know those names cause you can narrow down a bare block for sale.

Was the block different starting in 1965? I dont have an early 1000 to compare it to. Mine is a 1965 with the "Loose" cowling style.

I kinda assumed the 90 cube block was the same from 1962 until they stopped making them?

I have both, I can take pics. Cranktrain is interchangable between all 90 cube versions, except reed stops may be set different depending on h.p.

Can somebody tell me what the "extra" set of fittings and hoses are right behind the fuel supply lines? It has the regular "weep" hoses back farther towards the head, like I'm used to seeing. Are these the back drag systems I read on here about? (If I remember, the general consensus is it's better to remove and plug them off?)

The hoses immediately behind fuel feed to carburetors are the balancing feeds to the reeds / intake area.
The hoses further back are for oil recirculation.
Nothing on this motor to do with " back drag " at all.
It was only on the carburetor itself in later years.

Don't plug those off unless you want to learn all about rebuilding powerheads the hard way. The back drag system came much later and was just a small hose on the carb bowl vent that lowered the pressure in the bowl at midrange and leaned the mixture... exactly what you DON'T want to happen on an outboard. Lot's of melted pistons were the result.

I knew the + battery cable was bad, but closer inspection revealed more problems. Anybody know where a guy could find the motor to control box harness for a 63 Merc 1000? (I could rewire with new cables & wire, but don't know how they connect to the plug.)

You will need to replace the scavenging hose before you run the beast, and based on the condition of the existing hose you would be wise to replace all sections of it and the balance tube system hoses.

Mark, If you notice you have one of the more odd ball wire harness's that have the big Pos and big Neg terminals more centered in the plug. My 65 900 is the same.

The most common are the off center ones. It will be harder to locate a good set to replace the one you have.

Might be better to replace the motor side with the more common off center plug and find a good used set of controls for it.

Just an idea.

The "plug in harness " is nothing but a convenience thing.
If you are not worried about an authentic " look " then you can install a terminal strip for the wee wires and modern wiring direct from battery to the solenoid and ground.

Update: Joe Poole ( www.FergusonPooleMarine.com )got in touch today, and has a cut harness with a good matching plug and length of wire = Back in business!
