TOPIC: Starter nut tightening problem

Starter nut tightening problem 14 years 3 months ago #16357

My solenoid is loose because I can't tighten this nut. I believe it is just turning the threaded rod it mounts on somewhere inside the starter. Short of pulling the starter apart (and then what?), any suggestions for how to tighten this nut?

Thanks!

Frank

Push a small flat screwdriver blade above the wire connector so it "pulls" the stud down while tightening. You may be avle to get the stud to catch enough (inside the starter) to tighten the nut.

Next is to grab the exposed stud with diagonal side-cutter pliers, and use an open end wrench on the nut.

OR- Remove the nut if possible.. so you can get the wire connector OFF. Then re-install the nut and tighten it as indicated above until it bottoms- securing the stud so it no longer spins. Then you can use a 2nd nut to hold the wire connector.

I could get the step ladder out tomorrow and see if I can see the top of it.

There is no wire connector on this nut. The nut is almost tight, no room to get a screwdriver in.

I'll probably try to grab the end of the stud as you suggest and see if I can hold it tight enough to turn the nut. Then I'll see if that works!

Thanks!

Yes Jim, I know, but I can't see the top of the stud. I'm gonna limp by until I pull the motor for the winter, then take the starter/solenoid unit off and go at it. In the meantime I need to run an auxiliary ground wire.

Is there any way to get a hacksaw blade in there to split the nut?
I wouldn't try a chisel for fear of damage from pounding, but cutting parallel with the stud may get it off.

I carefully gripped the end of the stud and the nut just turns in place. It's stripped obviously. I will disassemble it over the winter and fix it. I have a back up starter to rob or use if need be too.

Thanks,
