Picked up a Merc 1000 that had been sittin a longgggggggggg time....
It will not swivel or turn L/R.
I pumped in some grease, put heat to the mid section added penetrating oil and and more heat....and still nothing.
I was told it will take some time but figured the heat would loosen it up quickly....

There isn't a locking mechanism any where is there?

Any other helpful ideas?

Keep soaking it in a good penetrating oil and working it with heat...it will come loose eventually...just might take some time(days, weeks, months...never? ).

Best to soak it REALLY good and let it sit for a week or two.

they usually freez fron the top so work there first till grease comes out the top.lower could be reverse locks or cams.

I thought I scored when I got a 96 johnson 40hp short shaft in what looked to be in great condition with 128lbs in both cylinders, controls, fires right up and runs smooth for $200 bucks. I stored it and didnt realize untill a year later the swivel was locked like it was welded. I threw it on CL for $400. It didnt sell. I greased it real good untill grease came out everywhere then forgot about it for 6 months untill I went to sell it again and the buyer asked me to double check if it was still frozen from the phone. I gave it a jerk and it freed up. A bit tight but would work. OOPS, The motor was no longer for sale and its still sitting in my garage. I give it a turning every once in a while. Now if only I knew how the trim works, Mike

So what you will find is that the swivel pin or more correcty tube, is made of steel. the swivel bracket is made of aluminum and has grease seals on each end. The steel tube will rust if not greased and corrosion welds to the aluminum. the seals will keep the penetrating oil from penetrating. Try removing the zerk fitting and spray the penetrating oil in there. Heating the aluminum swivel bracket will help as the aluminum will expand faster than the steel so that should help it loosen. get the motor mounted on something that will allow you to really force it to pivot. Once you get a little movement more heat and penetrating oil will help.
The gear shift being stuck could have many causes, some not so serious others are. Too many possibilities to list here but remove the lower and see if then you can shift the motor and see if you can shift the lower unit, what might be wrong depends on which one is stuck.
Good luck, what year 1000?

Be carefull using Mapp gas! Its temp is about 5-6 times the heat of propane.
Good Luck

Rather than risk damaging anything else, why not just diassemble it enough so that you can loosen the nut at the bottom of the swivel bracket. At least then you should be able to work it vertically as well as turning it to break free any corrosion/overtorque that may be holding it. It is a bit of work but it beats any more damage.

since you got grease out the top that is the hard part .nnow work the grease down to the bottom heat down thereand leave the top alone till you get it out the bottom.i have done many in the day.

silly question....the top is like 6" from zerk.....bottom is like 16" ...how long does it take to get the grease to the bottom?....

I mean where the zerk is located...it will always squirt out from the top first?....

I will heat below zer area and go from there.....

it will follow the easiest route. rust will determine that. heat amd time work it for a while then take a break and come back to it later.

Re:won't swivel.....Merc 1000 14 years 3 months ago #14575

I'd have to agree on the advice above - if you are in a hurry, disassemble it. Take the lower off the swivel, disassemble the swivel assembly. My cousin has a ~63 45hp and the swivel was locked tight. After a few days of grease, heat, and cuss words, we took it apart. In a day or two it was back together and swinging freely.

If you are not in a hurry, let it sit for awhile, occasionally working the grease and heat.

No matter the path,Patience. You don't want to break anything....

Use the MAPP. The swivel bracke is a big hunk of aluminum and it will take a lot of heat to get it warmed up. it is the temp of the part not the flame that counts. Obviously, it is the lower bushing in the swivel bracket that is corroded to the swivel pin, not surprising as this lower area sits in or near the water where the top one does not.
Another option is to unbolt the whole thing and find one that is not frozen. Removal of powerhead is needed to get at top bolts.

Re:won't swivel.....Merc 1000 14 years 3 months ago #14773

Matt,
You can also drill and tap a new hole for a second zerk at the bottom bushing.
Drill through the aluminum and through the bronze bushing (if it has one - some didn't) and 'dimple into the steel steering rod, but do NOT penetrate it.
Then tap with 1/8" NPT and install a second zerk.
There is no steering arm on your Merc so you will have to be careful just where you 'push-n-pull when trying to get her to swivel so you don't thrash the rubber mounts.

report:.....:...:....

I picked up a MAPP kit the other day .....MAPP gas is heat 3x quicker than propane?..says right on the bottle?....
Heat and lubed for a couple hours nothin'

For those suggesting to disassemble...the motor is locked to one of the steer stops...so I can not get to one of the top nuts.
I thought about your idea but not going to work very well since I can't get to that one nut on top.

Thom I believe your idea may be my next step...for what I paid for this Merc....I have more time in it already....

will report out in few days.

Re:won't swivel.....Merc 1000 14 years 3 months ago #15010

Well I will add two cents on this.

With you grease gun, "water-down" the grease with a true lubricant (not WD-40) like PB-BLASTER. make the grease rather "runny", then pump that in..

keep in mind "gravity" is your friend, so pump it in and let her stand normally for a day or so..pumping more in everyday, and then put her on her head and pump more in and let her stand...before flipping it, you may want to empty the fuel bowls on the carbs (I never found that necessary).

if you can get it on a nice...heavy boat, and get it so you can run either a rope fall to it or a come-along, where you will be able to anchor the come-along to an anchor point for both directions. use a tow strap choked up around the around the shaft to prevent damaging the hand grips. you may need to cut the tow strap to fit or tie it, hook the come-along to the strap, heat it up and give it a turn with the come-along, should brake it lose. don't be afraid to man handle it.

Re:won't swivel.....Merc 1000 14 years 3 months ago #15014

best penetrating oil hands down is home made

50%50 solution of acetone & ATF "Automatic Transmission Fluid"

the Acetone has great wicking properties and drags oil molecules with it , it also eats/softens old hardend grease etc

I find it better than PB Blaster & its cheap so use it liberally

Do what Ole Evinrude did. Weld a rudder on the back and call it a Rudder Six :)

was going to mix up some that special lube today.ATF & acetone..only problem ....what to use to inject it where I need?

need some help.....

the other mixture that was described the grease water'd down w/ penetrat'n oil....how do go about this?...are pulling the grease from the tube mixing it up and then putting it back int the tube so you squirt it through the zerk?

Going to be by Farm&fleet tomorrow so i can snag what I need...

Re:won't swivel.....Merc 1000 14 years 3 months ago #15131

yup take a plastic jug, spoon out the grease out of the tube, put it in a cut off jug like a soda bottle, cut and mix it in the soda bottle but not to soupy and put in back in the grease guns tube.

best I found is work half the tube at a time, leaving some grease behind to be able to push the lighter stuff off the top in to the zerc.

now, if you have an air compressor.....here where the fun comes in, you can use a bottle with a screw on top, in the lid have a line in which would be just at the lid/cap, and have a line out that goes just to the almost to the bottom, on the line out you would adapt a grease gun hose. on the line in you would adapt a line from your compressor, again don't make it to runny.

if you have a magic bullet mixer (you can get just a mixer blade and a cup on ebay) to super blend before use will help allot, just leave that blade and cup out in the garage and never use it for food stuff.

very important in either case, to be wearing some safety glasses.

So...
I have heated and re heated with no luck.
I have tried the watering down grease with WD-40....nut'n
I bought an oil can adated a grease hose on it thread it into the zerk hole and am currently pumping in 50/50 mix of ATF and acetone..I started this yesterday (24hrs) and still no change.

Now I'm scared to put heat back on it with fear of igniting or ruining the housing?

I don't really have any where to use leverage either so i am using the handles on it.....

Thom suggested me drilling and taping a zerk at the backside of motor? i want this to be last step.....

i have been working it now for about 3 weeks (not straight through)?

it is turned so i can not do a partial disassemble either.

urg.... :S :S

Greetings,

Where is the motor mounted? Is it on the back of a boat or on a stand? Was pondering ways that you could get some leverage on that lower, but need to know what it is sitting on. I have a '63 1000 as well, and can stand there and are at it until an idea pops out.

Also, how far over is it turned? Can you snap a pic for us of where she's sitting/mounted? Will help with ideas.

Picking up on the idea as to how the motor is mounted, If the steering cable is still hooked up...THAT may be your problem, the cable is bound up.

I agree. But....if the motor is on a stand and you are this bound up but have your heart set on the motor then start tearing it down so you can get at the pivot at this point. Cut the bleeding so to speak. If you are mounted onto the boat the first thing I would have done is undo the steering and if you are still stuck at this point then begin tear down to get at it.
What year is it? Take anything good off of it and install it onto another mid that turns. I have short and long shaft mids for M1k's 62-64 and 65 and up. You have fought this one long enough to start tearing it down or get another part for it.

I have it mounted to my work bench, no steer cable.
year i believe to be '65 Serial # 1758106
It is turned to the right (from backside) all the way to the steer stop.
There is a pic here in this thread that Thom was pointing out where to put a grease zerk.
I pulled the lower unit.
I'm not really sure whats good and whats not..

Need to go back and get controller for it...ones I have won't plug up to it.

I am contemplating tearing it down and going from there...parting out or putting in boxes for a later date...one when the swivel is free'd up............................

....or resting up on the stand so i can swear at it as I walk by everyday...
