TOPIC: Lifting the motor from transom

Never had a boat with T/T before.... ('cept inboards)
I have a 1978 Merc 1400 with T/T.
I have removed all the wiring, steering, and cables.
Will remove the (6) main mounting bolts when I get it over to my shop and ready to mount on the new transom.
All that's left is the (4) T/T hoses and the wire for the limit switch.
Should the T/T come off with the motor... or can I leave it behind for later?
What's the best way to go about removing the hoses? Stay connected to the pump, or to the lift cylinders?
The wire for the limiter is TOAST! it is so brittle and dry-rotten that it just falls apart. The only thing holding it is the nylon strands inside the sheath. I'm just going to cut it- as it needs replaced anyway.
Is there a special lifting tool for the top of the motor? If someone has one.. could they post a photo... so I can make one? Or.. should I just find some good places to attach a chain and lift it that way?

leave the hoses hooked up remove the cyl and mounts and leave them with the boat. after the motor is off you can replace the wire that is needed.lift ring screws in the flywheel.don't lift from the cowl you will break the rubber mounts. if you have someone to help 2 people can lift by grabbing 1 shock area each and the handle on the back.

I couldent budge a 76 merc 150hp by hand. I had no choice but to get a cherry picker but thats just me.

I found a lifting tool on Ebay heartland...worked great...spen the extra $$ and get the spacer for removing the flywheel...

OR

If the rear of the boat is low enough put a few blocks under the skeg and get another strong friend there and lift the motor hight enough to get off the transom rest against boat...the carefully lower to the ground..if you can do this in the garage...get a furinture dolly or 2 and lay it on it so you can wheel around out of way as needed......

if you are planning on putting on a stand get the lifting tool....

I have also used a tie down strap wrapped around the motor, you just have to be careful about not breaking anything on the motor and adjusting the strap to make sure it will "balance" when you do it that way.

I have an engine hoist- and it will be pulled and set on the Fabuglas asap.

Thanks for the pic of the lifting ring... Anyone know off-hand the thread size on the flywheel? For $29+shpg... I can make one quicker and (much)cheaper.

It may be back in the archives, (08-09) but I remember somebody posting a drawing of the tool with all the specs on it. I'll see if I can find it bud.

Back to the T/T unit... I got a chance to look at it in the daylight (home for lunch). See photo below...

I'd love to have an old Studebaker to worry about finding a crankshaft bolt. I love those cars (and trucks), but have never been able to afford one (or 2 or 3...).

In response to your question, yes, but is that bottom most bolt a thru bolt from one side to the other? Mine is.

yes it is but it does not have to come out of the motor just the cyl brackets have to silde off.

i know they are fine threads.....not sure on pitch...for the $$ its worth it especailly if yo plan on staying in the hobby....
