I've been spending so much time working on the Fabuglas.. that I haven't had a chance to really dig into this motor. It's a 1978 1400.

I'm not familiar at all with Mercs..- and that has prompted a couple questions.

A: What is this? Tilt-sensor? The current boat has no trim-gauge. Can I add a generic gauge or do I need a specific one to match?
B: This wire is SEVERELY damaged. The covering if flaking and falling off every time it's moved. I haven't followed it too far into the hull.. the answer to A might help.
C: How does this unplug? Just pull? Twist up and pull out?

Thanks!

Im to lazy to walk out in the garage and look at mine, so i cant answer A or B tonight... :P

But C...it just pulls straight off...might need a little rocking back and forth to get it to start moving.

Actually, im kinda curious about A myself...id like to find a trim gauge if these motors are compatible with them...

I think you will find that is the limit switch wiring for the trim. I stops you running the motor too far out & risking damage as it isn't supported properly.

A is a micro switch that is adjustable for how far you can tilt the motor while running.
B is the wire from the mico switch. if it breaks you cant tilt the motor must jump the brokem wires.
C just pulls out.
