TOPIC: 115 Lower unit

I know nothing about Merc's, got a friend with a Mariner 115 that he bought from Bill Roberts several years ago. I'm thinking it's a late '80's. The lower unit is now cracked and leaking. I found another (Merc) 115, don't know what year. Are the lowers the same throughout the years and will interchange?

'79 and newer have a redesigned gearcase with swept-back skeg and other mods. They are a hair longer in the front but will still bolt up to an older motor, since the bolt pattern, driveshaft splines, shift shaft, exhaust tube, water tube are the same locations, and dimensions. Some 60's-vintage lower units aren't quite as compatible but if you have an Inline Six from around '72-up, it's pretty much a no-brainer.

If you post some pics of the (2) 115's we can narrow it down for ya...........ed

Called Bill, he thought the Mariner was an '86, got a serial no from the Merc and it looks to be a 1977. Bill said '72 up should work. With that and what you say Ed looks like this is going to work. Thanks
