TOPIC: 1962 Mercury 70HP positive or Negative ground

1962 Mercury 70HP positive or Negative ground 6 years 5 months ago #136827

I have a 1962 70HP mercury that the bendix will not spin up when the starter motor spins. Everything seems loose have I connected the terminals wrong, is this a positive ground motor? I have black on the neg and red on the positive is that correct? Any help would be great.

The electrical system and starter motor are negative ground. Many possible causes, here are a few:
starter solenoid
starter carbon brush(es) issue
starter field coils or armature issues
rotten wiring (do not forget the remote control wiring harness)
unseen corrosion at terminals, like the battery lugs

We have a used starter motor assembly, or may can supply starter parts as might be needed.

It turned out to be a bad battery. Showed good volts but not enough amps. New battery problem went away. Thanks for the help
