TOPIC: 1977 Merc 1150 - Prop Shaft Seal Seating Depth

Does the inner prop shaft oil seal seat against the ledge at the back of the bearing carrier (looking from the prop side) or does it sit directly behind the outer seal?

If you had the correct seal installer tool, depth would be automatically set. I'm pretty certain it doesn't matter much so long as the seal is square to the housing.

The man who had been working on my motor got sick and gave it up. The local dealer basically told me to pound sand. I am on my own and installing the seals with the bearing carrier still in the lower so I couldn't use the seal driver if I had it. I'm not going to worry about it and put them back to back and be done with it.

Kevin, the inner seal is driven in until it's seated against the bearing carrier. The outer seal is driven in until it's seated against the inner seal. The lips of the inner seal go inwards, against the oil; the lips of the outer seal go outwards, against the water.
