I'm doing a number of repairs on my 1965 Merc 350 which, since I have pulled most other components, has lead me to taking a look at the carb since it is now easily accessable. When I looked into the fuel "bowl" where the float is, I can see a buildup of material. See Picture. It is powdery and a light yellow color. At the beginning of last season I removed and did a complete cleaning of the carb. This residue is the result of maybe 30 hours of runtime.

Any thoughts on if this is normal or not?

And a secondary question, given this build up, should I take the next step and completely take apart the carb and re-do a complete cleanup? (I'm not really turned on by the idea of taking all those small components apart again!)

Thanks

Time and ethanol gas will do that. The entire carb--stripped down--needs to be soaked in a god carb cleaner, then blown out with air.
