I have a 1971 65 hp merc, and the internal wiring is cracked. is there a way to rebuild the wire loom , or do they make a replacement for it. can I try to start it with the wire loom in bad condition or do I need to have 12 volts hooked up? thanks greg

Greg you have two options one is to carefully put liquid tape on all the cracked wires or come down to the shop and match it up with one of my parts motors. Cracked insulation on mercs is a common problem I deal with all the time. The up side is any 4cyl motor from 68 to 72 is the same harness from what I have seen. Well you have talked about coming down for years now you have a excuse lol

Greg,

Post a picture of wiring issue. Are you talking about the motor side wiring harness?

Mark, you should have posted something yesterday. I just sold the '69 650 last evening to a guy in Oconto. I could have taken all the pics you need. :(

Re:wiring 8 years 2 months ago #127882

Cal - I am more interested in pictures of the process vs the specific routing. I need to fix the wires on the 1500, and I can probably use the 1350 as a guide to where things go. It is just a few suggestions of how far to go with cutting back and re-wiring that i am interested in.

Thanks though!!

Sent to both

Once i figure out how to effectively post pictures here i will i work mostly on Mercury 4cylinders Mark 30,55,58. When cutting wires back best way is the farthest back to the connector to where you have good wire to make the connection. I use 16 or 14 awg for most of the wiring except for the large 4awg black & red battery wires with non insulated wire crimp connectors and shrink tubing over the connections. I also got creative and made stamps for the mercury graphics on a Mark 55a Rectifier that actually works pretty good!!

If you want a new internal harness for your 650 4 cyl solid state,
Mercury part number is: 52771A2 @ $216.58
CDI electronics number: 414-2770 @ $140.28
These are the prices listed on www.marineengine.com
I prefer using the CDI/e harness.
It is the one in the attached picture.
