I am looking for a engine for a project and came across what they say is a 1969 100hp. This is basically what I am looking for but from what I have found there is no 100hp listed for 69 they are all 115s.
My problem is that they really haven't got a clue what they have and no idea when it last ran and or don't care they just want it gone.
It will be a little more than a 2hr drive to ck it out and I don't have the time to waste if it is junk. They are asking $200.00 but say come look and offer. The pics sent appear that it is all there but is it worth it? Also am I correct in thinking that a 100hp tower is at or around 280/300lbs ?
What's out there and what should I look for? I am on a tight budget.

If they want it gone $50. All these motors must be gone thru to work properly and cost money to do so. If you have a mechanic side to you fixes can be done with some help. I guarantee parts must be purchased. Depending on what your plans are for the motor is your decision of how much money you want to put in it. I would say without looking at it or condition your looking at $500-700 in parts then all your time in figuring out the problems and putting back together.

The one I mentioned in the 1st post is no good kind froze up lol and he won't deal. Done!

Next I have to move on this one if its as nice as I think.
1979 90hp pwr trim fuel system update for E gas wiring looks great and has all controls and new trim pump. Just wondering if $1700.00 is to much.

In my neck of the woods those motors list for $1000 to $1500 on craigs list, depending on condition. I'm not saying that's what they sell for, just what most guys list them for. Unless that one is pristine, low verifiable hours, perfect compression etc... That price seems a bit steep to me.

The compression is what bothers me. It is 125 all 6 holes but I sofar have not found what the correct #s are but have seen as high as 155. Anyone have the real #s?

I don't know if Merc ever published actual compression numbers. Most motor manufactures did not. It opens a huge can of worms for warranty coverage. If they publish 150 as an example, and within your warranty period you get one comes in at 140, well..what do you tell the customer. I know OMC did not. 125 per hole is pretty darn good. I still think price is high though. I would definitely would try to get it for less than that.

Have a line on a 1990 115, waiting on the S#s now but I am a lot worried about the 325lbs on this one. We will see on the #s but it looks very nice sofar.

Getting back to the '69 for a moment, they did indeed make a 100 hp that year, the 115 did not appear until 1970. For two hundred I would take a chance on it. Properly set up they are beautiful runners, and they look stunning. As for compression, 120 is the usual number I look for and it has to be constant across all the cylinders tested. To be really sure however do a leak down test, a it tougher to do but it tells all.

So,.. after a lot of looking I ended up getting a 1977 115. I bought the whole boat and stripped out the steering/controls/wiring w/a new deep cycle battery and the fuel system was all new this summer with all rubber parts upgraded for the E-gas including carbs. As a bonus it came with a very nice tandem axle trailer.
Got a stand made and the engine is ready for a spring fit.

Agree!

This is a good combo flywheel puller/lifting eye for a reasonable price on eBay:

Thanks for the link, I have bought one so I have it when I fit it to the boat.
I didn't have much choice at the time and was not happy about doing it. Please tell me what I need to look for now that I have "F"ed up.
