TOPIC: 1968 Mercury 500

1968 Mercury 500 9 years 3 months ago #114920

Have a friend who bought a 68 Merc 500, and having trouble getting it firing.

He has spark, fuel, compression. But can't get it to fire.
What is the correct timing setting for the 68 Merc 500?
And do they set the same as the bigger Inline 6s? (IE- Idle timing and WOT timing?)

Cturbo, before you try and time it make sure the plug wires are going to the correct plugs. If it has spark, fuel and compression the spark must be at the wrong time.

Good possibility the flywheel was taken apart and put together wrong. Check the mark at TDC for number one piston to make sure that this was not done in error.

THunderbolt, I would assume. It looks very similar to the inline 6s.
Yes, the plugs are in correct orientation.

Will check the TDC....
But does anyone know the idle timing and WOT timing?

put top cyl on top dead center then point the arrow of the mag pulley pointing directly at the crank that times the belt. WOT timing wont keep it from starting. don't know that timing off hand.

make sure the belt pointer aims at the white mark on the flywheel edge, not the three dots.

(FYI, this is a friend I'm trying to help via the phone)

it starts, but his throttle/idle stop plate was off the motor when he got it. Looking for some baseline settings for guidance.
