TOPIC: parts to horde 71 800-850?

parts to horde 71 800-850? 9 years 3 months ago #114856

Hello. Theres a person near me parting out 2 mercs an 800 and an 850. I believe the 800 is a 71 same as mine. Im wondering if theres anything I should go and get if its still there? As far as I can tell, my 800 dosent need anything, but its gotta last me a good while yet.

I'd go after the powerheads or the entire motor for that matter. I had an 800 give up the ghost and know others that had the same issue. Usually pistons burning out. Very un-Merc like. So a spare powerhead is a good thing.

If they have spark, the ignition components are something great to have spares of.
The 850 block will not fit onto your early 800 driveshaft housing, but the lower units will interchange, and both should have the very desired 2.31:1 - typically a must to get good performance out of either of the beasts.
A spare crankshaft or two can always be handy, or an easy resale.
