TOPIC: mariner 6hp to 8hp question

Regarding the mariner 6hp. I just took it apart to get the choke knob out. According to the parts diagram it looks like the only difference between 6 and 8 hp is the restrictor plate. I was wondering why this motor pulled so hard. I think its been de restricted. Anyway,, again looking for opinions,, am I seeing this right? part # 47. Also,, shouldnt there be a reed valve somewhere? Or is the throttle plate in place of the reed valve? Seriously, im from the old 2 stroke days.

Hi. Im sure this gets asked, because when I searched, I got a bunch of different and equally wrong results. Seems like mariner serial numbers are very inconsistant at best?

I have a 6hp 2 stroke mariner looks newer,, late eighties, to nineties.

Blue grey in color, and pretty heavy compared to a vintage 6hp.

Serial number 06221668

Can anybody point me to some correct information? Year, fuel mix, can i turn it into a 9.9 or a 15? Its a big hunka 6hp. So either its a real brute,, or??

My searching has called it a 1976 150 hp, and a mid nineties 200hp, c ant be right.

do you have a picture of the serial number.. are you sure that's the correct number..
i came up with the same thing.. 150hp by those numbers..

If it's any consolation, I've got a later model ('99) Mariner that is the same way with the serial number. 50HP four stroke but doesn't fall into where it should on anybody's list of serial numbers.

The serial number is 0G221668 for the 6 hp Mariner.

After testing this mariner,, then I get to test a real gem from way back.

Ok so the mariner is a 1995. Still looking for oil mix ratio. Going to test tomorrow!

50:1 for the Mariner.
Be sure the oil has the additive TC-W3
Be sure the gasoline in not ethanol.

Good day of testing. Whew! the oil I use does have tc-w3. Its cabellas brand 2 stroke oil for outboards. Very cool because with an adapter, the mariner ran off the same tank as the big merc at 50/1. Once we figured out the choke,, that big 6 horse mariner starts very easy. Its got a heck of alot of grunt! I just finished testing a 1961 merc 6 hp twin, and its a real slug compared to this mariner. The older merc6 seems to be spinning its little heart out, but dosent do much on the back of the glasspar. I think its meant for smaller faster hulls?

On the other hand, this mariner is apparently a popular sailboat motor,, so intended to provide more grunt?? In any case, its real beast for power, and a total pussycat to start.

WOW, I traded a 2hp honda 4 stroke for this. The other guy prized the honda for its lack of weight,, and I just wanted a motor with reverse. I hope hes happy too. Im very happy with this mariner.

Not to derail this thread, but that is one sweet Oliver. Should start a post in other outboards about that one when your ready.

will do. Hate to take the mariner off for more testing. Its such a good match to the boat. In testing today, it actually saved us. My buddies fishing line got tangled in the big propeller, and I didnt want to start it without getting the line out. So, after videoing the mariner, we put her on cruis control and used it to get round the lake and back to dock.


So, in case anybody searches again. The serial number denotes 1995.

Can be converted to 8hp with typical(?) reeds and or carb.

Its a brute as is in 6hp form. mariner claims 69 pounds weight.

Runs on 50/1 oil gas. If any yall are ever considering one, Ide say goforit.
