TOPIC: Same stuff, different day. Still won't plane. Ahh!

Same stuff, different day. Still won't plane. Ahh! 14 years 5 months ago #11335

Took it out yesterday, and it still won't plane.
The only thing I haven't changed back to before this started is the prop. I replaced the prop after our first trip. (it planed then) The prop hit a rock and so I tracked down (with the help of this board, thanks again) a prop matching the same quicksilver part #.
48-22105A2-10 Is it possible two props with the same # have different pitches/angles?

one may have had some cup added , however I dont think its your problem

I dont recall if you tested your compression or not but since you have JUST rebuilt your carbs before the issues began, I think if it were me I would revisit the carbs

I was thinking about doing that. I just got off the phone with a local outboard shop that would actually talk to me about this old of a motor, and the mechanic initially said carbs or timing. When I told him I changed the points and gapped them, he asked if i set up the new points on a degree wheel. I did not. He told me he could set this up for me if I removed the mag. (he's booked up through august) Does this sound like a reasonable explination. I'll still go through the carbs again before it goes back out.
Thanks again guys!

If your points are slightly out of synch, you will still plane, but it will affect your WOT performance. It sounds like a spun hub in the prop to me.

thats a real possibility , didnt you just put on an unknown used prop...you would have lots of throttle and no go feeling with a spun hub,or it can feel like you get to a certain speed and it feels like you loose traction like spinning the tires on your car, you generally will hear the rpms jump when this happens

or is it just plain lagging with insufficient rpms to get up on plane

Its the second of the two, Just won't RPM. I'ts 108 today so I'll be going out to check the carbs tonight when it cools off.
Thanks

Oh by the way,is the hub your talking about the center of the prop with the splines?

Not a spun hub then...

A spun hub would rev high...just wouldnt push you much, if any.

After I clean out carbs etc. Is it possible for me to run this in a bucket (30gal can) without the prop. Put it in gear, and rev it to see if I get the rpm's up?
Let me know before I screw something up. I'll probably try tonight as it's only supposed to be 101 today.
Thanks

no dont do that..... a test wheel is needed
watch ebay for a used test wheel 1 did not sell yesterday, possibly it will be relisted
if you have an old prop some guys will cut the blades down enough to work, however I do not know how much to remove, maybe some one with experience modifying a prop for this purpose will post
