This is the starboard motor on my PowerCat 18dc. When we had it out for the first cruse it stuck in forward. I lowered the LU and tested cables and shifter. They were fine.

Tried shifting manually on the LU.Seemed to just spin. After i pushed down on the shift rod on the LU, not very much or very hard, I was able to get it in gear.

Now she shifts OK on the hose, but i have not taken her back out on the river yet. I have a problem at the prop and need some advice.

You'll see in the pics i attach that the prop must have been rubbing against the LU. The back shoulder has no paint and is ground to a sharp angle. It was not like that when i installed it.

I also notice that the prop moves forward and back on the shaft by a hair even when the nut is as tight as i can get it. If you look at the attached parts diagram i was missing part 78, a thrust washer. I ordered one off ebay but it appears to be smaller and doesn't seem to do anything. I think the prop would go between 78 and 79. If so, that washer would just flop around.

I don't want to run this with the prop moving around like that. What do you think?

the prop- is OK. check your reverse lock assy. if it is not working freely it will be hard to shift and can damage the control box. which box do you have?

These twins are paternal... Not quite exactly alike. The port lower looks like the one on my '68 1000. different thrust hub. But thanks!

I'll have to check the reverse lock. Didn't think of that.

I wonder if the body of the prop has an issue. Have you tried fitting it to the other motor to see if it does the same thing?

It looks like you have the correct prop hub on there, it's a single-piece one, right?

Maybe you just need to shim the prop rearwards a bit, you could add a couple of the shims like the one that sits between the square shoulder of the propshaft and the thrust hub. That would bring the prop farther back, and maybe it wouldn't rub.

Does the prop spin true? If it were wobbling at all (i.e. bad rubber hub), it could rub on the gearcase.

Your pictured thrust hub makes me think that it is from a Mercruiser, and if it is, it is too short. The front to back length measurement of a correct thrust hub is 1.6625 inches.

I was thinking it looked a bit short but couldn't really tell from the angle of the picture. Didn't know that Mercruiser had a similar, but shorter hub. That would really mess up things, eh?!

I found some of the 30581A 1 hubs on eBay, and one of them had a good picture, HTH............ed

The thrust hub looks about 1.4 inch! Also, would the mercrusier be wider? Look at the pic of the thrust washer sitting on the hub. Is the correct hub narrower than the mercrusier?

I did not try putting the prop on another motor, or trying one of my other props on this one. Have to go to work.

Joe, have one of these in stock?

no the nut is ok. I hope you did not wear to much from the housing and prop if so you will get to much exhaust out around it and cause cavitation. simple fix for that would be J-B weld.

Not at home but i think the housing seemed ok. The nut is concave on the edges now though. Might have screwed up the threads in the housing. Guess i need a special tool to remove that nut?

I'll measure the prop when i get home to see how much shorter it is than the other one. Didn't seem like a lot was worn off, just that it changed the profile of that lip.

The hub definitely looks short. If you look at the pic I posted, the stainless ring presses onto the side of the hub where it sits against the prop body. All this is, is a wear ring. And it does take up a little slack between the thrust hub and prop body.

The one you ordered off ebay is the wrong size, but as you can see in the pic, the stainless rig already comes with the new hub.
