TOPIC: Oiling internals on a sitting few years Merc.

Say ya have a sitting but ran well before Merc (or any 2C). Yeah, oil the cylinders, etc but how about internals on a fire up? Good idea, bad, don't matter, to crank and spray some fogging oil in the open butteryflys carbs? Plugs in or out matter? Carbs dry and no gas yet, just a "pre-oil" starter spin. Curious!

If you are concerned that the crankshaft and related bearings are dry,...But you select not to tear the beast down and check for bearing etching of the crankshaft & rods, etc,...(hint hint hint) I would pour Marvel Mystery Oil (MMO) into whatever opening you have in an effort to thoroughly coat any and all surfaces in the crankcase.
Once you are convinced that everything in there is coated, allow the MMO to drain out the best you can. Maybe a day or two.
Then I would recommend removing the spark plugs, and spraying CRC fogging spray into all the cylinders - ideally with the cylinders vertical so that the lube can coat all surfaces as the piston(s) are moved.
Then slowly rotate the crankshaft allowing the CRC to coat things as you go.
Allow it to soak for a day or so.
Then, with the spark plugs removed and pointed downward with the ignition turned off to insure no ignition spark-e-spark'n, I would carefully flush the crankcase and cylinders with a 25:1 fuel mix - slowly rotating the crankshaft as you flush.
Then, with the spark plugs out and the butterflies open for 24 hours,...Allow the crankcase fumes to evaporate - hopefully landing in Obama's wind pipe.
Now you are ready to proceed to a start up.
If it knocks or becomes increasingly noisy as it runs,...Remember that I suggested disassembly to look for ambient moisture etching of the bearing surfaces.

Well, as I was just curious, the meat of this is Doc its Ted's 800 on the Dorsett so you know all about the motor. He's finally getting around getting it fired. I drained all the gas out the front tank (about 13 gallons), smelled great and he ran it in his truck no problem. Its still sitting all this time his (old Swiftys) heated shop so moisture should not be a problem. He wants to go ahead and fire it but told him drag in here so I can oil the piss out of it and do it halfass right first. I did cut the gas hose to the motor. I'll put a inline small filter later but for now use a portable tank for gas so not have to go through the hassle of pumping out the front tank again. He's already got the Searay in the water, and I'll keep bugging him to get the damn thing over here. If any problems ya know damn well it "going back to the Doc".

Anyway, got the Flatty fired, working on the 20 footer now, and getting all the other "toys" fired. I'll have to shoot up there and see what the hell ya been up too soon! Maybe this week? Maybe Tuesday? I'll get a hold ya when!

I don't think that motor has even had any break-in time since I sync'd it and did a couple hours on the muffs. It hasn't even been wet has it??

He took it from you and went straight to the shop and never wet new motor, or fired. I want him to keep it out the salt as he got the Searay to play with here. Told him do Summit lake for wet. I KNOW when finally wet it won't get used much (maybe, who knows)and I'll MAKE SURE he fogs it good if gonna sit and run the carbs dry too. Better safe than sorry and all ya gotta do is clean the plugs if out again. Plus only ETH free fuel that we get the corner Casino owned (Little Creek) station here.Same here as like the casino on 101. Think he's gonna like the extra 30 HP, but like you and I said.."go easy" to see how it handles bigger motor than the old 500. Got some questions ferya, but we will talk Tuesday. Seya then! OK Merc Gurus, long as I got ya in the "boxing ring this "welterweight". On grounding out the plugs for whatever reason. Think I asked before and never got an answer. Talking Mercs here. Can you not just what think a push in, the Primary coil/s and yank that. Another old PRI wire to some ground block, save the fancy electronics"?

Also does the upside down cap also a "screw in PRI wire?"
