You had a picture a while back showing which wires to disconnect and which wires to jump on inline Mercs a while back to start them without the ignition switch...but i cant find it now...or maybe it was someone else??

Anywho, im getting ready to tear into this '70 1150 and want to try to fire it tomorrow...could you(or anyone else whos in the know! ) please tell me what, if anything needs to be disconnected??

Ive already dropped the lower and will be using just a garden hose hooked up to the water intake for cooling needs...

So looks like i dont have to do anything but put gas to it and go??

Now just have to figure out how to ground out the circuit to kill it...

You could touch a jumper wire as described in Thom's post to stop the motor, I would think.

Out of curiosity, i just tried just spinning it by jumping the starter...turns over fine, but no spark...

Could have sworn these need a constant 12 volt source...

I always thought the same thing, until that discussion. (Unless the motor had a magneto, which generates it's own spark.) You could use a battery, hook up a set of jumper cable(s) to the hot lead connection where the harness hooks up.

Ehh, i dont want to get too carried away jumping this and that hoping to find the magical combination that brings it to life...dont wanna fry anything.

I might just wait till i can acquire a new ignition switch or a key for the existing one...or figure how to hotwire it in the control box for now...

After digging a little deeper, i think im just gonna hold off on trying to start this thing...the wiring is just a freakin mess. EVERYTHING is rotted and corroded to no end so who knows whats good or whats bad...

Anyone have a wiring diagram for this motor??

Here ya go!
Sorry about the delay.
See the attached picture for details.
Without a control box you will also need to just run the (2) jumper wires on down to the (+) battery terminal rather than the solenoid since the solenoid won't have 12v without an external harness, etc.

Much appreciated Thom! I've got half a dozen wires to repair/replace before I dive too much further into this but just the info I was looking for.

I'll report back with my findings tomorrow...

Ok, got the wiring cleaned up and back up to snuff...

Jumped from the 12V+ side of the solenoid to the red and white terminals on the switchbox...put 12V to the starter turning it over...no spark... :S

Do i need 12V on the solenoid too or just jumper it to the switchbox?

I failed to add that little tid-bit of important info in the picture, but I put it into the short narrative. Sorry if you missed it.
I have corrected the picture so it can be kept for future reference without the narrative.
Here is the corrected pix.

;) Ill give er a shot!

BTW, should there be any sort of voltage on the wires coming from the stator when jumping the starter?
