Starting to cut her up, do to the shape of the transum (outward curve). I will be replacing it from the inside.
So the cutting begans! Taking just enough of the splash well out to work and replace the wood.
It's kinda an unusual shape transum. I instead of a "Y" shape I'm going flat across the whole thing? Plus braces, according to the literature I've read, it's rated for 150hp, but it seems a little flimsy the way it was originaly?

As to the transom, it looks like it was set up for a short shaft motor so should be fine to raise it, but pics can be deceiving. Just make sure you don't go too high for whatever outboard you are putting on it. I'd think it would definitely be stronger, and I don't think it would affect the look at all.

Cool Boat! :)

Hey whatsleft,
That's a good point! My plan is to raise the transum 5in in the center for a longshaft. I have an abundance of them kicking around so there's no shortage on parts!
I have this 64 starflite that's in running condition. I really like the look of the cowl! But the e-shift is kind of a bummer! Also have a few 60 sea horses laying around, so who knows? Definitely going long tho! Finally got her in the garage!
After getting the seat out, I started cutting into the floor!
The floor was very wet and rotten, made for a fairly easy removal!

So now to remove the rest of the transom, I'm thinking of using plywood to put back in the floor? Any thoughts?

Jim that green color is the bottom of the boat. The floor boards where 3/4 thick by 2in wide. They pretty much covered the bottom with resin and stuck the wood right to the bottom. I'm thinking about 2 or 3 layers of plywood would hold up nicely! And I would be able too make the curve if I put them in one at a time. Matt
Quick pic through the front hatch!

I know it wouldn't be following the original construction Matt, but what about laying down a couple of 1"x2" "stringers", and filling the void between with pour in foam? Maybe some of the gang with more experience can chime in with their opinion, but I'm thinking it might be a good bit lighter than laying in layers of plywood? It might also give you the opportunity to level out the floor some, as well as providing some floatation.

Just a thought, that's what usually gets me in trouble!

Awesome pics! Looks like the Polaris model. Thanks Andy!

Hey mark, I was thinking about those stringers, the only problem I may have
Is head room? It doesn't have to be exactly like original just strong. Thanks
for your input! I like too brainstorm! Thinking about captain chairs instead
of a bench up front? Matt

Re:1960 Whitehouse victoria 10 years 4 months ago #99055

That is cool. I am by no means an expert on this, but it looks like those benches and possibly the front seat helped to give it strength and stability across the hull- no? Can't tell if benches went below wood but looks like it did. Anyway, you could do a 2/3 stringer/plywood floor from transom to a few inches under roof then a small step down to maintain some head room. Would definitely go with captain chairs up front...less twisting around and banging knees, arms, legs, head...etc...lol. Are you leaving it open, or thinking about a wall like in the pictures?

Hey whatsoever,
The. benches probably do play a part in strength and stability.
I plan to put the rear one's back in, still unsure what's going back in the floor though? As far as the "wall" i'm leaving it open, driving from in the cab is what makes her unique! Plus I like the open feel yet still out of the weather. I can probably boat right up till the ice starts lol well it gets cold up here in n.y. so maybe not!

Finally warming up a little bit, so back to work!
Still shooting for mid summer on the lake!
I'm going to layer plywood in the floor, so I needed to fill the spin so that my resin did run out from behind the wood
3/4 X 3/4 strips imbedded in dura-glass worked out nicely!
Some pre bending with a ratchet strap!
Started getting first layer in. I decided to do the first layer with shorter pieces because they bend easier. I hope to get all the floor in this coming week, then hopefully pedestals for my captains chairs!

Finally got all the wood in! B) the transom came out great! the pedestals should work out great as well off set for leg room and comfort. Recycled captains chairs! They look like a heap now but they'll look like a million bucks later! Hopefully I will be able to start glassing the floor this weekend, 2 layers of wood and 2-3 layers of glass should strengthen her up nicely!

I figured while I was fiberglassing I'd give the windshield a go! Surprisingly I had enough of the windshield left to zip tie and make a pattern. Wish me luck! Matt
Actually the pattern came out decent.think I'm going try Polly carbonate instead of plexiglass.

Well last July didn't work out for me, but I think I have a chance at getting her done this July! She is mostly in primer on the deck, a bit more sanding on the hull before icing and gel coat. And I have started the interior, still a lot to do in a short time! Hopefully life doesn't get in the way and hopefully the admiral keeps giving me weekend passes! I attended the 34th vintage treasures, aka mahogany memories last weekend. What a great time we had, awesome venue, great bunch of people, and of course slot of great boats! It was such a long and stressful road to get her theree, but she did great. Second place outboard and people's choice! A week later and I'm still on cloud nine!
