Andrew, Keep us posted on this steering wheel rebuild. I've tossed some over the years because I thought they were too far gone to fix up. Curious about the two part putty, is it hard to form up once it sets or do you have to shape it pretty close to done before it sets up. Is it sandable etc?

The putty works great. Mixes easy and is firm enough to pack into any crack and hold its shape. You have nearly 30 minutes of working time after mixed. Sands smooth, and takes primer really well.

After sanding the putty smooth and priming with a polyester primer (my new fav), I had to recreate the grooves in the top half of the wheel. I ended up using a copping saw blade and drug it backwards to put the grooves back. Then wet sanded, painted, and several coats of clear.

OK, Andrew...I've spotted a lot of things that are NOT stock. The exhaust pipes will have to go, same with the gauges and a few other things. However, I've decided to give you a break and take a ride before you make the necessary changes. I'll bring Dos Equis, shrimp and cocktail sauce. Try to line-up a couple women of questionable character...no fat chicks!

(Better double-up the hose clamps on the exhaust system. That's a "no payout" if the boat sinks and Carla finds out.)

By the way, the boat looks so good, I've decided to raise the price. Another $1,000 should do it. Fedex me a check.

What's happening with the P/S running light lenses?

Your Idol,

Jan

Here Jan! Definitely a lot of "non stock" in this old girl! About $8000 worth! Haha

Still working on the lenses. The green has been nearly impossible for some reason. I've thrown 10 in the garbage and sold 3 so far. I've got you and 3 more wanting them. I've switched resin, to something I'm very allergic too, and have to be careful when using it. Hoping for better results soon

I neglected to take pictures of all I did. I just disassembled everything, cleaned and painted the "feet" where it bolts to the hull. I found a weather stripping gasket that I was able to retrofit under the windshield.

You wouldn't believe where those seat covers come from! Lowes home improvement... Large outdoor furniture cushions. They matched the boat and fit perfectly. The best part... $35 per seat.

I love that aircraft or classic sports car layout or the gauges. Looks like my Jaguar. I was planning on doing something as close to that as I can on the Chrysler.

I think you said something about advance in the video. You are running an all mechanical distributor right? Since boat motors are under 100% load, never coasting there is no need (or want) of vacuum advance. You have to be careful with total advance. WOT detonation is a killer. But you knew all that right?

Thanks for the post and advice! I have a marine Prestolite distributor. I intentionally set the timing high when I had the quadrajet on the engine. After I installed the new Edelbrock I failed to re-set it.
Here is a video of the engine running after final adjustments...

You can HEAR the lick of the cam a lot better. Plus, the CDI electronics shift assist module is very sensitive to ignition timing. With the timing high, it would shut down the engine when activated. Now it works properly, stumbling the engine.

I really enjoyed the videos...keep them coming. Now we need to see speed trials and handling filmed from another boat. Got a name for her yet?

Holy Cow, that's a huge compliment Jan, you are the master builder! I've got more sea trials to get behind me and correct the little things I'm sure that will crop up. More videos are definitely coming. I need a steeper prop to really see what she can do. The 19 pitch is like riding around in 1st gear!

As far as names go, I'm stuck... Give some ideas. She is a classic lady that can rock your world, when she wants too! haha

With that engine and considering the styling, how about "Retro-rocket." As for pitch, I would guess that you need less, not more. What is your WOT RPM? Try to shoot for about 4,600-4,800.

I haven't maxed it out yet. On the first sea trial I hit 3000 before getting to half throttle. Had a small oil leak so I backed off and headed back to the dock after about 30 minutes of slow cruising. Plus, my timing was too high. Great name suggestion too!

The engine sounds like it has a performance cam. If so, you'll need to advance the spark. You'll have to experiment with the timing. I generally loosen the distributor just enough to be able to turn it and then take the boat up to about 3,500 under load. Adjust the timing by maxing out the tach. (You probably already know all this.) After that, see what she's got in the way of max RPMs while underway, being careful not to exceed 5,000 RPMs. Too high, add pitch/too low, less pitch.
