TOPIC: 1961 Dorsett Catalina - Sacramento

1961 Dorsett Catalina - Sacramento 11 years 7 months ago #77479

Hello all,
Towed her home this week-end. Got a great deal but will need new stringers & transom. Looks like someone "tried" to do both at some point. I don't understand why you would only patch a problem??

It came with a 60hp Johnson, the top windshield, rub rail, extra windows, & 2 Wheels & throttles.

Sacramento

BTW, this is my first boat I have ever owned (not counting kayaks)

Nice Boat !!!! Can't wait to see the progress.
since you know kayaks.... you'll need a longer paddle for this one. Ha-Ha-Ha !!!

LOL, I could go with a sliding seat and install some oar mounts... Biggest/slowest row boat ever.

1st of many question:
I want my new transom to be as strong as possible. Can I use a hardwood like oak? Or at least maybe sandwich oak between marine ply??

photo shows the 1/4 steel plate someone installed.

If you are going to separate the deck and hull, and there is an inner skin, Seacast would be the strongest transom there is in my opinion.
And it will never fail again. It is expensive, but worth it.

Ok so I watched some vids and did some reading and found a few who said to use Nida-pour at half the cost but just as good. Any thoughts?

I am thinking of using a pour style for the stringers and use wood for the transom. The stringers are pretty rough so trying to shape new wood ones would be time consuming...

Here is a shot after I removed the HEAVY steel plate.

The "danenberg method" used in the restoration of classic runabouts... This method of construction employs an inner layer of marine ply with an outer layer of Mahogany laminated together with 3M 5200... and everything saturated in CPES.

Anyone try this?

Here is the link to the text (huge transom replacement)

And the link to the method he was talking about.

Nice Dorsett! I love the Catalina. Bought mine in Sac and brought it to SoCal. Keep posting pix as you go.

Have fun w/ your daughter. The time you spend will be priceless. Mine's a Belmont ad is all there but the 1960 Flying Scott Motor wasn't running.

I bought it a year ago had the upholstery redone, took it to a mechanic who just wanted to sell me another motor and never got it running. It sat it over the winter and last weekend we went through it and got it to fire up. Hopefully have it in the water soon. Here's a pic:

But you just started on the first one you say...

Yes this is true but I could not pass it up because I wanted the motor to use on the Dorsett.

Your posts are giving me hope! My boat looks a lot like yours and it's my first one as well.
I have been looking at my neighbors Dorsett Catalina sitting in her yard for the last 8 years and finally talked her out of it. I don't think it's been in the water since 1989. My father-in-law and I want to restore her together. He is a mechanic and I'm not quite sure what skill I bring to the deal!
Transom is trashed and I am betting the floor and stringers are too.
