When this was posted on sightings I put it on a watch list. Last Monday I put in a bid and took home a '66 Shell Lake Rocket. Really good condition. Now I have to start the tear down.
Had a '69 Merc 650el that I removed and put on Craigslist.

Glad you grabbed that nice rig. Sure looked like a good boat and good motor. That motor should make someone happy. Have fun and hope it is minor effort for this one.

Had the Merc on Craigs and less than 5 hours got a call from a fella in Milwaukee. Is driving to Green Bay on Sunday to pick it up.
Greg, I've been dismantling it today and it is a very solid well built boat. Have to fill in some holes that the PO put in to hold his personal goodies. Nice set of blasting air horns! Would work good on my Jeep
Like that self bailing setup on the main floor, never seen anything like that before.
What really pushed me over the edge was the picture that Terry posted. I'll stick with the robin egg blue though.

I priced it to sell...meaning cheap. I know it ran and the compression is good and when the fella called I told him that it was hanging on the back of a rebuild I bought and never ran it myself. It didn't bother him 'cuz he said he liked to mess with the old Mercs.
Listed it for $250. recouped some of the purchase price on the Rocket.
If you list on Craigs put it in the twin cities area, Eau Clair/La Cross etc. Be surprised how many people just stick with their local area and don't spread out. I did that with the pull toy and a fella from north central Indiana bought it. The Tomahawk went to a guy in northern Illinois that had a summer cottage north of me.

Well, as usual, all smoke and no fire. I still have the motor. Guy never called back.
Meanwhile I put the Rocket in a position that I can comfortably work on it over the cold months. Just step right in. The trailer will be stood up against a wall where it can be disassembled and rewired.

Cal:

If you cut out that cross piece in back of the rear seat, you'll have room for a V-drive small block Chevy. Just a thought.

Two coats of K2 high build after fixing up some trailer scars. I'll be roll and tipping the bottom. Spraying sure leaves a bad smell.

Been a while since posting. Life getting in the way with the admirals knee replacement.
Did manage to put some paint on the deck. Temp was in the low 40's' so I had to take advantage of the warm weather before snow starts flying.

Something just did not seem right to me after Greg's comment on his '58 Rocket so after consulting the FG library it is determined that this is a 1960 and not a 1966. Just goes to show the registration info is not always correct The light blue was a '60 color and the bow hardware matches what I have.It might have had the front spring seating because the seat pad is cut out but I see no indication of where the original seats were so I'm just putting is a regular bench type.

Nice Cal, is this the rocket that was on ebay via rawhide? I had her on watch too along with the larson playboy they had... You don't mess around, you must have barely got on the drive before you got started on her...

Yah, Shake, it's another Rawhide acquire. Love doing business with those wonderful people. It sat in the garage for a few weeks until I sold my other shell lake executive. It's a winter project but I would like it to be finished for the Lake Kosh....... show in April or May whenever it is. When the upholstery is finished but not installed I'll be painting the bilge and sanding/polishing the topside then put it all in a corner to get the trailer re-done. And then there's the motor to deal with :(

Snow, snow, snow...what to do but work on the cushions. Got all the seat bottoms cut out, working on sewing the sides. 13 cushions, most I've ever done. Four down. 2" foam on order. Note the "project" laying against the wall in the background.

Yes, always the motor, I too have issues with.. I know enough to be dangerous when it comes to engines, but not enough I guess... what motor does it have, or are you putting on it?

That project is looking great, Cal. I wish I had your sewing skills...well, I guess all of your skills would be quite useful. I guess since they cannot be "downloaded", I will just have to get brave and get in there on my own project and learn as I go. I think I will practice my glassing skills on some scrap first.

That interior looks very nice (and I LOVE haw that back seat angles!!)

It will be done way before Kosh in May 2017...sure hoe we get to do that again!

Thanks Mark, The goal is Kosh, so far it's on schedule unless the admiral had another knee replaced. That might throw an anchor in the water.
Finished up the seats, got the 2" hd foam delivered the other day. Bilge is finished and now the job of sanding with 2000 and polishing. If you look at the pic you can see the aft is partially finished.
Might be some unfinished posts from my end. Since I re-installed "10" on my antique laptop pictures won't upload to this site. Have to use my desktop.
By The Way, that is Rustoleum enamel with hardener. Had some old cans of white, green and blue and dumped them all together. Got lucky at Jo-Ann's fabric and found some marine vinyl that came close. Rough spray job but luckier that there was no orange peel or fish eyes. light sand with 600 w/d then down to 1500 and then 2000 and then power buff with Mequires(?) polish and then some Turtle Wax hard shell.

That sure will be on nice rig. Hope your better half has a good and speedy recovery. Though I always hear the procedure and re-hab are tough, I seem to always see happy people back to enjoying life once it is all behind them.

Are there different grades of marine vinyl? Seems like when my modern boat got done, I loved it and it was comfy because it seemed so soft compared to the 70's when it seemed so stiff, tuff and durable that you likely could sit down with a screw driver in your pocket and not tear it. I feel like the new soft stuff could tear, so I am just really careful. Any way to find different grades of durability or is only one type made? Who do you ask, or where do you look? My local person only showed me the one material and I never gave it a thought years ago until now since I want my glassic to really last.

I did see two types of "marine" vinyl. One was soft and had a leather grain to it but it just seemed weak to me. The other marine vinyl was much heavier I think it was about 30oz or however it is rated. Also has a different rating for UV and temperature differences. I know the stuff I'm using/used is heavy and it really taxed the old Kenmore when I had to go through four layers by the piping. Used a strong nylon outdoor upholstery thread also. I did invent new words to describe the process.
If you compare older Bayliners with the cracked, burned, and ripped seats you can see the difference.

Thanks Cal. If I ever get that far in 2017, I will have to do my homework. I want the seats to be durable since I am older and want it to last at least one hand-me-down to my kids/grandkids (if they want the boat someday).

Slowly making some progress. Scored 3 period correct steel gas tanks without rust from Craigslist, $5 each!
Also rewired the motor control electric box. With the Voltage regulator it's like packing 10# of crap in the 5# bag. Finished installing all under dash wiring, motor controls and windshield.
