My friends & I are planning to restore an early 60's era fiberglass boat. She's a SPAN AMERICA B6006 "Pirate" model.that's been trailered outside for the last 18 years. Hull is in very good shape, but the wiring is shot and we'll need to rebuild or replace the Merc 40 hp outboard. Can anyone here direct us to literature, diagrams, parts lists, etc. to guide us.
Any assistance would be very appreciated.
Thanks,

Welcome aboard. Have you checked the Library here, there's some pretty good info there;

jkf,

WELCOME ABOARD.

ImVho, a MERCURY of that era is TOO HARD for neophytes to restore themselves, as some of the parts are $$$$$$ & they require "special tools" (You may read "special" as: EXPENSIVE.)to work on properly.

IF it was mine, I'd find & remodel/refinish an OMC BigTwin in 1957-70 era.(omitting only the 1960 & 1961 40HP models & ALL of the electric shift models.)

just my OPINION, satx

welcome . can you post a pichter of your boat and motor? if its all black its a 1960 and if its black and white its a 1961. I have a 1960 v.i.p. runabout with a 62 40hp electric shift and ive had no problems. ( some have) it will make you a very nice rig. best of luck Bob

Welcome aboard. Us old guys need lots of pictures. I agree with satx about the motor but I've never had problems with 'lectric shifters if they are maintained properly.
