Finally winding down on the rebuild of a Lone Star. It was a typical POS that I usually get for next to nothing. Not one of my better efforts but still an eye turner. Some touch up on paint and final hook up of motor steering and electrical should just about complete it. Plan on taking it to the Door County Maritime Museum classic show next weekend. dcmm.org

Not a whole bunch of info on this particular model, some stuff on the web but seems like there are not many survivors.

Looking good !! I agree, not many known of running. I know of only 4 now. But a very interesting and fun to run boat. May your smiles be as big as those running the tan model in the 64 catalog pic.

That must be one of the very last models before they became Chrysler boats.

Thanks for the kudos guys. Didn't post any progress of the build cuz it seems to take up more space on the threads than necessary, at least for me.
I flip most of the ones I rebuild. Some I keep for years. If the price is right it's gone.
That motor, Johnson RDS-20, is a beauty. Good compression, new coils, points, condensers, wires, plugs, impeller, new fuel pump diaphragm. Runs good in a garbage can but I need someone to tag along with me in another boat while she gets a final running tune-up.

I always loved the Mystic after finding out about them while researching my Lone Stars. Precursor to the modern bass / flats boats.

It was a beautiful looking restoration. Saw the boat the other night when I was showing him my '63 Lone Star Triton. Thanks for showing the Mystic and giving me some advice for the Triton!

Re:'64 Lone Star Mystic 9 years 3 months ago #114423

Sounds great! I pulled out the seats and took off the vinyl. As I was cleaning off the adhesive, I saw a lot more screw holes in the floor - along with about a 1 inch hole. There is water in the foam. Any suggestions on how to dry it out?

63LStriton,

WELCOME ABOARD. - The sole way that I know of to dry the waterlogged foam in a hull is rip out the floor & the tear out./replace the waterlogged foam with NEW waterproof foam.

No can do that. This is the foam sandwich design like your new mystic. There has to be a different way. On the Mystic I did there were enough holes in the hull that the water literately dripped/ran out after a few months. This may sound a little against all reason but in the off season if it's stored inside I'd drill a hole in the bottoms lowest part and let it drain for a few months. The hole is an easy fix on this design. Pump it full of great stuff foam and put a glass patch on next spring.

Re:'64 Lone Star Mystic 9 years 3 months ago #114433

Cal - that was what I was thinking of doing, but it feels wrong to punch another hole. Would replacing the transom open it up in a similar manner? Maybe kill two birds with one stone?

Btw - I opened a new thread in member projects. How do you post more than one picture at a time?

Replacing the transom will not drain the foam, you have to find some midpoint.
To post more pics on the same thread you have to post your original with one picture then "edit" add another pic, post that, "edit" again etc. Pics are size sensitive, can't be too big. I usually keep mine to around 1000 pixels.

Re:'64 Lone Star Mystic 9 years 3 months ago #114440

63 Sabre,

Cannot a person separate the inner from the outer hull & then dry out the mess???
(I seem to remember seeing that done on another similar Lone Star hull, on another boat website.)

Good question. Have to explore how to separate the two pieces. Maybe after removing the top deck one can use a cutter and go around the inside edges, lift the whole tub out if it stays in one piece or remove it in sections that can be glassed back together. Interesting...

Hi Cal,
The Mystic looks Great!!!
Are you looking for another project? On my way home from dropping off my daughter at UW Stout Menomonie I spotted a number of boats well back in a field, one from a quick look appeared to be a Mystic. If you have interest I will check it out for you next trip down.
I also have a 1959 Tomahawk Ski-Mate I could deliver to your shop for cheap. I would like to see your shop and shake your hand.

Small world. Was just at Stout 2 weeks ago, dropped off the grandson. Football. Took 29 across the entire state wasn't looking for another project. Right now my workshop (is actually my basement/garage)is full, have a EZLoader trailer on craigslist right now taking up a lot or room. Maybe next spring since I have an extra running motor hanging around with nowhere to go. Keep me in mind.
Thanks.

Re:'64 Lone Star Mystic 9 years 3 months ago #114812

I believe the boats I saw were just off 29 east of town. I'll have a look if I find time, just for curiosity sake.
I'm hoping to take the 63 Shell Lake Tempest this fall and putting her in on lake Menomin. My daughter would like to see the town from the lake. Perhaps your grandson would like to ride along.
