TOPIC: Tomahawk Ski-Mate

Tomahawk Ski-Mate 9 years 7 months ago #109159

This weekend we bought what we believe is a '60 or 61 Tomahawk Ski-Mate. The fiberglass seems to be in good shape, but that's about all there is to her. We're hoping to do a quick fix up and have her in the lake by mid June. We've already gathered a lot of good info from this forum. Wish us luck.

My son and I are itching to get going on this, but we've had to wait on title work. In the mean time we're at least making a little progress on prep work. Last night I ordered tires for the trailer, and thanks to MarkS we have fenders and trailer brackets coming. Today we stopped by a local clearance store just to see what they had and we found a random orbit sander for $10, and an outdoor carpet remnant big enough to do the entire boat floor for another $10. I like bargains. :)

Your trailer parts should go out Thursday or Friday Dave, I'll drop you an email to let you know when they ship. Nice score on the sander and the carpet, "frugal shopper of the week" award goes to you! ;)

Thanks Mark, I'm sure glad you decided to save the trailer hardware.

So, after four weeks of paperwork and phone calls I took the Ski-Mate to Division of Watercraft for a title inspection. Turns out I don't need a title, they measured it 2" short of the length requiring a title. Still a worthwhile trip, they're mailing new hull ID numbers so I can get it registered.

Making progress on our Ski-Mate. The white house paint that the PO had coated it with was a bear to get off, otherwise it's gone smoothly.

Doing roll and tip with Rustoleum Topcoat. First coat was drying to fast. Added a little thinner to the second coat and it smoothed out much better.

We probably should have spent more time on surface prep, but getting it in the water before summer ends trumped having a show quality finish.

It's exactly what I'm looking for, Mark. But I have a feeling shipping is going to be a little more than it was for the roller brackets. I'll send you an email, I am curious.

The roller brackets worked out great, thanks again.

Really looking good. My 16 year old son has no interest in helping me work on my boat. I was hoping he would get the bug, but so far he hasn't.

Not yet Cal, I'm ashamed to say! Everything is kinda on hold right now, don't want to clutter up this thread with my "issues". ;)

Just wanted to say thanks to the members and moderators of this forum. This is our first boat and without all of the information and opinions that we've been able to gather here we would have been lost. Special thanks to MarkS.

You're more than welcome Dave, glad to help! Having the gang here to help us out is what makes most of our projects possible. I know I'd have given up long ago without their support - the best in the business IMHO.

Found a ShipMaster contoller on Ebay, bought new cables, tracked down a missing cable end. Getting everything connected, and hoping the weather holds for one run with the Johnson before we put it away for the winter.

Re:Tomahawk Ski-Mate 9 years 1 month ago #116517

The weather was good enough today to try the Johnson. Ran pretty good for a little while, then the carb got a little cantakerous. Now the boat goes into storage and we spend the winter tuning up the motor.

Thanks, Mark and Bob. She won't win any shows, but we're pleased with how far she's come. Hopefully, next summer will be all about enjoying the fruits of our labor.
