I noticed one of my neighbors struggling with his push mower in the tall grass yesterday, offered to knock it out with my riding mower. When I finished he thanked my and says "I notice you like old boats". Ears perked, he explained that he bought one a few years ago and never got around to working on the "project", would I like to take a look. Here we go again......

Said to be a 1959 Razorback Ski-Jet with Johnson SeaHorse 35hp - year unknown. I didn't see any '59 brochures in the library, anybody have one they might share here? Going to pick it up Saturday, will have picks and more info then. Really looking forward to bring this finned ole gal back to life, although it will probably take me a while. Pics to follow soon hopefully. :P

Well she's home. A little rougher than thought, but still a viable project. It doesn't look like a Ski-Jet, I believe it's more along the Utility lines. The bow looks different than what I saw in the FG Library, some more investigation is going to be needed. Did score a nice Super Seahorse 35HP with her as well, I'll be posting some questions in the JEGO forum on that. (I'm familiar with the '70's OMC motors, this one is definitely different.)

I'm thinking 61 or 62 on the motor. Could clean up nice. Hopefully no structural issues

59 was the last year for the 35. In 60 it became a 40hp.

Doug Reese,

YEP & imVho, that 1959 BigTwin was the BEST of the 35s. - Further, imVho, the 1965 was the best of the 40s.

PM me the serial number & model number off the data plates & I'll be glad to look them up for you. = Sometimes I can even find the MONTH that the OB was assembled, though far from always.

Thanks for the info on the motor guys, Al also helped me nail it down in the JEGO forum. Hoping it turns out to be a good one.

The floor is definitely toast Frog, but the stringers are fiberglass and appear to be in tact. The transom appears solid, but I will know more after the "garden" and floor are out. I'll more than likely replace it anyway, taking a chance on an old transom just isn't my style. ;)

Mark, the disease is still present I see. Nice project. It just might be the last time you help a friend with his lawn, tell him your too busy working on a boat

How did you manage to get it home? Trailer on the trailer or a new wheel(s).

Awe, he was struggling Cal, I had to give him a hand. I try to always help somebody who is trying at least. He drug it down the street with his four wheeler just the way you see it! (You could hear the metal rim on the blacktop coming all the way.) I have a better trailer to put under her, just needs a little TLC before that happens.

That trailer has the 8" wheels that are held on by the bearings, and a 1" ball. I need something a little more roadworthy, so this is what she'll be riding on before long.
I'm still not fully convinced it's a Razorback, the bow details don't match anything in the Razorback library. Gotta love the little fins though....... :)

It's going to be slow going, but any progress is good progress right!? Got the old make-shift floor somebody put in haphazardly, didn't take much to get it out. Kinda cool the way the steering cables come right through the gunnells.

I'm still not convinced that I've properly identified this boat, the bow detail just doesn't match the Razorbacks in the FG Library! The guy I bought it from can't find his original paperwork.

Re:New Project 1959 Razorback (?) 9 years 7 months ago #110169

Hi Mark,
I agree, I don't think that it's a Razorback either. When I first saw the photo, I knew that I had seen this one before. My first thought was the SurfRider. Very similar deck treatment, but the hull is completely different. Just by coincidence, the Surfrider hull appears to be either splashed off of the Plastyle or maybe they bought the molds from Plastyle. Anyway, There are other boats out there with similar decks, I'll see if I can come up with something closer. It was patterned off of the later post World War II wood boat decks. I've seen those fins before also. I'll be looking.

Still trying to get a positive ID on this boat before I run the paperwork through the Georgia DNR. Once it's submitted there's no changing it..........?

Re:New Project 1959 Razorback (?) 9 years 6 months ago #110435

MarkS,

I'm 90+% sure that it's NOT a Razorback. = My GUESS is a OUACHITA, ELDO-CRAFT or GENERAL MARINE hull.
(I went to college in Arkansas & all 4 companies were located there & "went around stealing" other companies designs. = I used to think that it was FUNNY that the little companies in Arkansas were "stealing" REDFISH's designs, that REDFISH had previously "ripped-off" from GLASTRON.)

It may also be a CADDO BOATWORKS hull that was built in Arkadelphia, AR in an abandoned Texaco gas station. - When I was in college, it seemed like "everyone & his brother" was building "clones".
(My college roomie's dad owned GIANT DISCOUNT CENTERS in the 1960s & GENERAL MARINE "badge-engineered" some 50+ fiberglass boats for Mr. Lockwood's discount stores that were "named": ARKANSAS PRINCESS.)

MarkS,

Have you taken a strong light & "crawled around" the entire interior & looked VERY CAREFULLY at all the interior areas of the hull?
(A lot of the "clone companies" embedded a paper tag IN the glass with builder's information someplace inside the hull. = One of my hulls had a tag underneath the seat framing.)

GOOD HUNTING.

Definitely NOT a Razorback. The deck looks familiar, just can't place it, but I do know with 100% certainty that is was not one of the Razorback models. Nice looking boat tho. I love the deck treatment.

That, Sir, looks like a Performer Sportsman or T-Bird to me, and you are going to have one helluva nice boat, when it's done!

Here are a couple of links, which I think validate my opinion.

Very cool little boat... I like the fins- Just enough there to not be too crazy.

I have NO idea what it is- I've never seen one quite like it. I do wish you luck on your search for the manufacturer, though!

That motor is nice- I've got the Evinrude version of it from the same year ('59) on my Lake n Sea. You've even got the 'carry handle' on it still- That is missing a lot of times. I don't know if you've tried to carry it yet, though- Even with the handle it's not fun :)

Parts are easy to come by, too.

I'm looking forward to seeing this one progress!
