TOPIC: Can anyone identify this boat?

Can anyone identify this boat? 10 years 3 months ago #96413

Hi,

We are in the process of cleaning out a tool shed on our farm and would like to get rid of this boat. It has been in the shed since we bought the farm in the early 80s (left behind by the previous owners). Can someone please tell me if it belongs in the dumpster or on Craig's list or somewhere else? I would hate to send it to the landfill if that isn't where it belongs. It has been under a tarp in the barn and is on a very old trailer (has spoked wheels).
Thanks for your help,
Becky

becky, any older boat is worth saving, take more pic's and some of the trailer and post them here in the glassifieds. someone will fall in love with her. even if the boat is rotted out , the windshield and hardware are worth some cash. please do not trash it yet. frog

Hi , Welcome aboard. Not a dumpster relic. Lapstrake hull looks MFG'ish. What does it say in the middle of the steering wheel?

Re:Can anyone identify this boat? 10 years 3 months ago #96427

The middle of the steering wheel says "Aquabird" and I think it said "aquameter" on the guage next to it. Where on the hull would I look for a name or data plate?

There is actually another smaller boat sitting inside this one (I didn't realize it at first and thought it was just random stuff/junk). The one inside is a sail boat and sail and there is a serial number on a metal plate saying it was made by sears and roebuck and is a whirlwind. I will try to get someone to help me lift this boat and sail out so that I can take some better pictures of the inside of the larger boat and the trailer.

Thanks for the help.

If there is a set of doors at the dash area with anchors carved in it, It is most likely a Lyman ?

Welcome aboard! Do NOT junk it. Someone somewhere would love to have the boat!

The "Aquabird" and "Aquameter" are the brands of those accessory they represent; steering wheel and controls. They have nothing to do with the brand or model of the boat.

Is the hull wood or fiberglass? It's tough to determine from the photos. If fiberglass she has the looks of a MFG (Molded FiberGlass). If wood, she looks like a Lyman or possibly Thompson Bros. Boat Mfg. Co. or Cruisers, Inc.

Definitely because MFG copied Lymans lapstrake design.

The boat is mostly fiberglass, but the seats, dfash board area, back and very front are all wood. There is also a wooden floor in the boat on top of the fiberglass. I did find a stamp on the inside of the hull but it is very difficult to read. I can make out the words: "Molded Fiberglass Hull" "Serial No. 77334" (not quite sure the first number is a 7) "Molded Fiberglass Body Co. Ashburn Ohio".

Here are some more pictures.

Mystery number one solved! She is a MFG made at Ashtabula, Ohio. That company still exists, by the way, but they got out of the boat business in the 1980s.

There are brochures here in the Library section.

What a great little runabout! Did you happen to also find, in the barn, an old outboard motor for it?

Times like these, I really wish I was located a little nearer to the mainstream boating areas of the country.

Made not that far away from me. Yes with these pics it is an MFG. Wish she were mine. Looks to be in great shape.

Re:Can anyone identify this boat? 10 years 3 months ago #96532

Thanks for all the help. After looking at the information in the library I believe it is an MFG Cambridge made before 1960. The only things which aren't consistent with the brochures are:

1. It appears to have some sort or canopy that can be opened up.
2. The seat back for the second row of seats is split (not a single bench seat).
3. The hardware is all chrome instead of brass.

I have not found a motor that goes on it, but I am trying to clean out some other out buildings, so it may still appear. Now I am wondering what the best way of finding a new owner for it is. Where should I list it? What should I ask for it (recognizing the priority is to get it out of the barn in the next few months not to get top dollar)?

Thank you to everyone for all the help.

Sweet!

I'd take some additional pictures, include some of the trailer (I'm very curious about that given the wheels - looks like maybe a home made) and put it up on ebay with the minimum you want. If you can find the engine, which may well be a Johnson (maybe 35?) given the junction box still in the boat, I suspect it will go pretty quick.

If I only had room...and time....
