TOPIC: NEW guy to forum, not to boats!

NEW guy to forum, not to boats! 10 years 3 months ago #96313

My name is Paul and I found what looks like a new home for me to share my story and my new project. I'm a Service-connected Disabled and Retired Navy Sailor who lives in the middle of Utah now. I just picked up a nice little 18ft runabout with 170/270 Volvo-Penta Stern Drive. I'll be putting in some TLC and a little cash to fix it up cosmetically but after a little PM she's "sea worthy" as she sits. I look forward to many pictures and sharing this little adventure along the way. I don't know everything but what I do know comes from personal experiences. I hope to be able to share what I know and to learn as I go.

Hey Paul, there's a lot of us old sailors on this site. Can't take the sea out of the sailor even if he lives in Utah.
Lots of pictures, that's what we need. There are separate discussion boards for I/O's etc but they are most of the same people. Just fire away.
Salute the ensign and come aboard.

I'll take some of the interior tomorrow.

My plan is to rebuild the raw water pump and put it back together to get it wet ASAP and do some fishing. It was given to me by someone who put some money into a head gasket repair because it was getting water into the sump. After the head gasket repair it still got water into the sump so his mechanic(who shouldn't be working on marine engines) told him the block was cracked.....

I found a ton of RTV silicone on every raw water pipe fitting and a screw in the raw water pump weep hole that told me a story...one which put a smile on my face! I have torn the entire cooling system apart and replaced the seals that keep the water out of the crankcase and will have it installed tomorrow. I have replaced the impeller and all o-rings as well.

I will back it to the water trough tomorrow and drop the out drive in to test it and keep my fingers crossed. Assuming I've fixed the problem I will start planning for new carpet and custom made bow seats next.

PaulhOLCOMB,

CONGRADS. = PURTY rig.
(WHICH engine do you have?)

Sounds like to me that you have "a grip on" the solution & are SOON to be out fishing.

PaulHolcomb,

Ah yes, the old 6-cylinder Volvo B30 car/truck engine w/3 carbs, "marineized". - Quite a "workhorse" from what most V-P owners around here say.
(It's "sole recurring problem" seems to be that IF you ever need an exhaust manifold, they are $$$$$$ and hard to find when you need one.)

I've also seen quite a bit of negative about this motor also. But mostly from the saltwater crowd. I've been super busy with work and haven't taken interior pics yet. I got a new phone so I will attempt some soon.

PaulHolcomb,

I would have mentioned B30 motor's problems with saltwater but I doubt (other than Great Salt Lake) that saltwater is much of a problem in UT.
(I know any number of boaters, who have run that old B30 for YEARS & YEARS W/O major problems on our BIG TX lakes.)

Don't let the "naysayers" discourage you Paul, every brand has it's loyal fans as well as those who "wouldn't have one if you GAVE it to me"! LOL

Some may be a little harder to work on, or a little tougher to find parts for than others. IMHO it's more about how well it was maintained in the past, and what kind of care and maintenance it gets from here on out. The resources of knowledge and parts scrounging here are almost limitless, and the gang is always glad to lend a hand.

Welcome aboard sir, and thank you for your service! ;)
