So I was working on the boat today and decided to get into the Mercontrol box. It was in bad shape externally so I figured its wouldn't be so hot on the inside either but what I found was WAY worse than I expected.

Needless to say I will be getting a new harness for it, the box itself looks fantastic now, thanks to Dr. Frankenstien's tutorial thread. I'll post more pics when the paint dries. I'm very surprised the boat isn't in ashes right now, let alone still running.

Holy Crap, I'm surprised it was functional!

Unfortunately, most controls do have rotten wiring inside, many as bad as pictured. Imagine how easy it is to blow an ignition module on the motor, when you "just want to see if it will run before I buy any parts" with a recently acquired outboard motor!

Yep, been there done that. Doc built me a Frankenmerc. What looked like a good box, was not so hot inside when a I split it to do shorter cables. He fixed me up with another, so good to go. But yours is way worse than mine. And yes, any older box is suspect to deterioration.

Looked at the engine harness, it was just as bad as the control box, ordered a new harness and it should be here in a few days. I'm very surprised the boat worked at all. I'll post pics later today.

Looks like I'm going to have to use the main parts (ignition, choke button, etc.) and just make new leads for the Mercontrol because no one makes a kit for it.
