TOPIC: Newbie - need help finding trailer parts

Newbie - need help finding trailer parts 10 years 4 months ago #95785

Hi all,

I'm a sucker - I answered a craigslist ad for a free boat.

the boat is in VERY BAD CONDITION! - Honestly - its little more than a decoration at this point - and an ugly one at that.

IN any case - I own a 1956 ford hotrod pickup - & when I looked at the title on the boat - it is a 1956 Glaspar so I couldn't resist.

I want to clean it up & drag it around town behind my truck - I'm not going to spend any real money on the boat - its too far gone for that - I know it.

What I need help with is the trailer - the tires and beyond rotten - & the bearings on one wheel are completely missing -

This is the coolest looking trailer suspension I've ever seen though - instead of a single axle - it has 2 small coil springs and independent suspension on each wheel. The wheels have no lug nut - but instead a single axle/rod that the bearings ride on - take a look at this picture.

I would like to know anything I can about this trailer - I need to replace the tires & bearings - I'm planning to have the trailer sand blasted - but need a source for the parts -

Thanks in advance - any help is appreciated!!!

Thanks Frog - that's what I thought too.

The guy said he left the titles to the boat & trailer in the boat - I found the boat title, but not the trailer - so I don't even know the year or brand.

It should clean up easy - just need to source a couple parts & I can get a bonded title -

brassmonkey,

First, WELCOME ABOARD.

I'd have an antique boat EXPERT look at the boat, before giving up on restoring it. = You COULD have a "diamond in the rough" & (at least I would,) you might be ILL if you found out later that you had JUNKED a RARE boat.
IF it's NOT worth saving, I would "strip it for parts" and FIX the trailer.

THEN, you should start looking for a boat, "that you'll fall in love with".
(There are LOTS of really GREAT hulls out there that NEED trailers & MANY of those are FREE or DIRT-CHEAP.)

just my OPINION, satx

What you look to have is an early model Husky Trailer.

You can get tires and rims at Norther Tools or Trailer Parts Super Store

www.easternmarine.com/8-Fixed-Hub-Integral-Tire-Rim/

The ideal on the two independent axles is for launching boats on soft banks (there were not too many boat ramps in those days)

If the wheel sunk down you did not have an axle down in the mud making it harder to pull out

You guys are great! I knew enough from my truck forum to find a place with experts to ask questions!

I'll fill our my profile later today but I'm from peoria il. All river water here. The gkaspar is 16 ft & says "ranger" on the back. The transom is soft & the rest of the interior is wood pulp with weeds growing in it. There are some cool parts though. Lights & whatnot.

How about a few boat pics? I'm dying to see a boat not worth fixing. Maybe it's not but we are a special breed here. This boat wasn't worth anything either but it would take a pile of money to buy from me.

Beautiful bones on that suspension. I'd look for some chrome coils to put on that dude. Almost reminds me of Harley soft tail. Could be a source for short little shocks.

Nice looking boat there.

I have these two pictures - I didn't take any of the interior - just think mulch & swamp & you get the picutre - there is some vynal where a chair used to be also.

It holds lots of water - so it should float.

My plan is to pressure wash it - empty the interior & then see what I want to do. the window & other metal parts should come off easy enough - I really dig the light on the front.

once clean - I'll probably spray paint it so it doesn't took like a total turd & leave it at that.

My concentration will be on the interior of my 56 pickup

The boat is just a prop to pull behind the truck.

Re:Newbie - need help finding trailer parts 10 years 4 months ago #95834

brassmonkey,

This is MY OPINION & NOTHING but OPINION.

A boat that needs the deck pulled & everything that is rotted removed/replaced is NO more trouble to restore than a hull that you're trying to "patch-up" & once the "tear out and replace" is complete, the job is generally done for your lifetime.
(Note that many of "our boats" have been used for a HALF CENTURY or MORE and are NOW in need of a rebuild.)

IF you like the design of your hull, repair/remodel/restore it.

yours, satx

A wise man once told me you need three things to own a boat.

VISA
Master Card
American Express

& nothing less will do.

All my money goes into my teenage daughters purse - that's why I'm picking up free boats on the side of the road.

you never know though - once I shovel out all the crap & power wash it I may find it will only take a few thousand $$ to make it presentable..........

Re:Newbie - need help finding trailer parts 10 years 4 months ago #95861

brassmonkey,

FYI, the last boat that my cousin & I re-modeled (for his family) cost us "the princely sum of" 580.oo, including the "maintenance parts" (points, plugs, condensers, wires, water-pump impeller, carb kit, coils, paint, etc.) for the 1965 Johnson 40HP OB, PLUS the 175.oo that we originally paid for the 16ft hull/trailer/OB.
(NOT a huge sum out of the family's purse, imVho AND a BARGAIN at 2X the price.)

HMMM, Rustoleum, looks OK in a pinch. I paid $20 a gallon. Lots of time but money wise it was not that bad and HEY you get to work with your hands and get that daughter involved. It will be her's someday. (Translation-FREE HELP) Another thing, althought I spraypaint this was rolled. Lots of Loving hand massage with sandpaper too. Yes It's the same boat. The Babe approves also. Hey boats are great. The best part is being in one on the open water.
