Hi All,

I've been working on restoring my vinyl seat cushions. Everything has come up great except for a few rust stains. So far I have tried Bar Keepers Friend, Magic Eraser, Windex, Oxi-Clean, Gelled (a product specifically for removing rust) and bleach (I know bleach is bad for rust, but I had to try).

This is a rust stain that has been there for over a year, so I think it is set and nothing will remove it. So, now I'm thinking about the option of a dye or stain that I can put on to...stain the stain white. Anyone have any experience trying to do something like this?

Thanks

Ive used CLR before with really nice results. Also, I use a product called Wrights on my house because of the sprinkler system... it works really well.

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried CLR but it didn't work either. I'll take a look at the other one you suggested but I think since the stain is set, that nothing will take it out. Sort of like when you dye a white shirt pink, the shirt is now pink and nothing you do (other than bleach, which doesn't work on rust stains) will make it white again.

Have you checked at Michael's or some fabric shops for Fabric and vinyl spray colors?

Thanks for the Michael's and fabric shop suggestion. I came across VHT Vinyl dye and Brillo Aerosol. I'm not sure why I didn't find these on earlier searches  I'll do some research on these. At first look, the Brillo looks good. It says that it is water proof and "Like all our Vinyl Dyes, it is a true dye, not a paint."so hopefully this will do the trick. Anyone have experience with one of these?

Rub a vitamin C tablet on it, wet.

Seriously! I have a fiberglass pool. Someone dropped some metal bolts etc in the bottom and didn't retrieve them. It was awful, I thought I had to resurface the pool. I talked to an old timer pool guy and he told me to take some vitamin C tablets, put them in a sock, put on the sock with the C on the bottom. Then simply scrub the affected area with your foot. The rust disappeared almost instantly!

I have found that Tilex (for bathrooms) seems to remove just about everything.

Thanks for the additional suggestions.
Vitamin C, never would have thought of that one. I looked it up on the WWW and see a lot of good results. I'll give it a try. The good thing is, now I have a solution for rust stains in my pool too (if it really does work). I'll let you know.

I'll try Tilex next if the C doesn't work.
