TOPIC: Serial numbers

Serial numbers 10 years 4 months ago #94544

Can someone tell me the year and horsepower of a Johnson Sea Horse from this serial number
608370.
This unit is made out of heavy cast aluminum parts and is painted the "Sea foam green".
Thanks

Darby, I've been looking at some Johnson motors lately and I find that with Johnsons/Evinrudes, the serial numbers aren't much of an indicator of what the motor is. Folks here tell me that there's a model number that tells a lot more. Might be on a metal tag near the transom clamps.

I just matched the serial # to the year, 1927, but not the HP.
Any help?
I think I just matched my posts with my age.

Green Johnsons were late 40's to mid 50's. Look around the cylinders for a silver welsh plug- it will have model and serial numbers stamped on it.

Norm, I tried to follow your instructions. I down sized the pictures to 640, and you can see the results. I'll keep trying.
Thanks again.
I'm a member of the AOMCI. That is were I found the serial # year
range. This # fell in the middle of the 1927 year range, but I could not find any thing on HP.
Thanks Kerry,
The welsh plugs in this engine are brass and are stamped with the manufacture's logo.

I see what you mean John. You could reduce the file size but if the pixel size is too big it still won't post. Never realized that. I use microsoft power toys for Windows 7, a free download from MS. You just choose the size you want, small, medium, large, etc and it does the rest including reducing file size from, say, 2.5 mb to 800 kb.

Not sure if it's available for windows 8.

You are right Kerry. I was was short one number. I found a chart on Master Tech Marine that list ser. #'s, models and years. There chart shows this # 608370 in the year 1947. Now the problem I have is this # can be a KD-15, SD-15, or a HD-25.
The chart also shows 3", 5", and 12". I'm wondering if this is the height of the decals?
Thanks again

Thanks for all the help. I finally found one running on another sight.
It is a 1947 KD-15 9.8 HP.
This puppy weighs more than most 30HP.

I have one...they are fun to run when you can get them to run. They are not cold damp weather motors

My lamp cord type plug shorted out and till I find a replacement I have a trailer plug in it's place
