TOPIC: Plastic type good for guage faceplate?

Plastic type good for guage faceplate? 10 years 5 months ago #93875

I'm looking at various types of sheet plastics that would be suitable for making a flat 1/4 inch thick faceplate for my gauges. It needs to be rigid and strong because the guage holes will compromise. It will have to be 6 x 14 inches. I'll settle for white, but red would awesome. I plan to machine a bevel around it too.

Mrpenton,

1st, WELCOME ABOARD.

While someone here may well have an acceptable answer, IF it was me I would contact a large plastics wholesaler by email and ask a pro in the field. - It's been my experience that such people are often kind to antique boat restorers.

just my opinion, satx

Why not use aluminum? It is far stronger, easy to work with, can be polisher, painted, or machine turned for a real fancy look.. The best plastic would be polycarbonate because it is crack resistant.

The photo below shows what it will look like when finished...sure beats painted plastic or polishing a flat piece of aluminum, no upkeep...and it's cheap!
