Hello
I was wondering if anyone has any information on Bristol manufacturing company long beach california, not to be confused with bristol boats of quimby plywood, which made primarally fishing boats & yachts.
this company is long out of buisness, but I am looking for any information, or old articles pertaining to my boat, there are only a couple news articles on the internet, and only one other person on photobucket that has a very original looking Ski Hawk.

These are very rare boats, as all the research I could find shows they only built approximately 200 59 ski hawks, I am very fortunate to have this precious famly heirloom as my grandfather refinished it 34 years ago, and I was driving it when I was 8 years old, now 40 years later I am doing a complete restoration on it and I am trying to find any old ad's, brocures etc, any input or help would be greatly appreciated

Wow! Welcome to the site smooger. That is one sweet ski boat. I think a refurb for it would do you better than a resto. again welcome and that is one sweet ride!

Thanks for the thumbs up guys, I was going to just refinish it again, but unfortunately there was a little damage to the hull when it was stored (enter expletive word here) so fortunately Harlan Orrin,is going to do the wood work then I'll refinish it again and it will be back better than new, searching for the Attwood steering wheel insert will be fun but I may just make one and laser etch it like the original, I never realized how rare these boats are untill I researched it, I grew up with it driving and skiing behind it so it was just the norm, now its great to preserve a priceless family heirloom, and also a rare peice of boating history

This was a neat and emotional find, as I removed the upholstery to remove the doghouse for the jumpseats my grandfather had signed the wood "this boat was refinished by Lindsay Allen 10-10-82 S.J. Ca., I will have to add my name and date when its done for the next family member or person that dose it the next time around

Update on the ski hawk, it's nearing completeion Harlan Orrin is a master craftsman, and in myopinion the only one to take a vintage wood boat to,
The most difficult thing was finding real (not luan) ribbon striped philipine mahogany, because they rarely harvest it anymore, 4 sheets of 1\4" marine grade. 1500.00 !!!

Don't know much about the boat other than I can remember skiing behind one in the early 60's at Shaver Lake, Ca. Back around that same time there were Kennedys as well with the same clear Mahogany and white finish. Harlan's twin screw Mandella is the same, it is really classic and a true testament to the craftsmanship of the era. You are absolutely right about Harlan he is the "Man" when it comes doing wood right, you were lucky to schedule his time. Let's see the boat at the Tahoe Boat Show this summer.

Awesome story and build. What a beautiful sight to behold. I built a small race boat in high school with Mahogany and marine plywood...I can smell the wood and varnish as I view these pictures...how is that not a Man's after-shave? Can't wait to see this done.

I have my Grandpa's old boat plan books from the early fifties where he wrote in it and included his bill of materials for the boat he built. I have pictures and movies of it, but the boat was gone before I was born...still - to see his hand writing was priceless. And the knowledge my Dad passed to me about how to build the boat that he learned helping Grandpa was such a gift. Though Grandpa was gone when I built my boat, Dad made sure he was with me every time I used his angle finder and rasps, etc. (with my Dad's guidance) that he used so long ago...again - priceless.

I try to remember he used brace and bit drill, hand cranked bits and counter-sink bits, and hand driven screws...strong hands, calluses, patience, and persistence. Lets thank ALL who help us and teach us and keep our passions alive and well for generations!

Harlan Did the basic wood work, it is now in the hands of Captain Gary Minnis at Classic Craft in Sacramento for the final finish work, his meticulous shipwright attention to detail is in a class all its own he has been doing chris craft type boats and yachts for over 50 years. one of his projects is a mahogany yacht that is into 7 figures www.SacramentoBoatrepair.net
