TOPIC: what am I looking at ??

what am I looking at ?? 10 years 5 months ago #92668

found this old girl and have no idea what it is
about 15-16' with most of a 75hp Sears outboard
the "tail lights" actually have bulbs in them
I haven't figured out the need for dual nav lights but
one set is moulded into the front deck
no markings anywhere in or out
Any idea of year and manufacturer ??

It appears to be a Larson Thunderhawk Junior, and it looks like about a 59. It should be about 14 feet.
A Senior is about 16 feet.
It looks like a Junior because the transom is only wide enough for one motor. Seniors had room for two.
There should be a small brass plate in the middle of the dash that identifies it as a Larson, but a lot of them have been removed.

I can't believe you just stumbled upon a Larson Thunderhawk that is one of the boats at the top of my list. I suppose you are getting it for a song as well. Oh well some guys have all the luck!

Re:what am I looking at ?? 10 years 5 months ago #92673

the seating is split in dual pods and the gauges were mounted on some sort of pressboard and has a metal door glove box in the center of the dash if that helps too.

haven't made contact with the owner yet but she's been there a while and probably not going anywhere soon unless she is dirt cheap...a bit rough but doesn't leak. it's about 1/3 full of water and trash.
and it's in Indiana about 10 minutes from my house

Yep, you've just stumbled on one of the few boats that a great many vintage glass boat guys would give an arm or a leg to buy.

Jim, I know you really like the Sea Ray 600 series. So if you don't rescue that Thunderhawk please let the rest of us know. However it would be a great boat to have in your collection.

you bet Morris
If I decide not to do the deed I will surely pass it on to someone who will
What would be a fair price for this craft ??
motor and controls will be useless there is nothing inside
I would consider this one a fair at best bare hull with most restorable hardware. The hull is in decent shape but can't tell anything about the stringers as yet but the transom is good and solid.

Jim it is hard to put a value on that boat. The molded nav lights are factory as are the taillights. There are a couple of guy's here that have Thunderhawks. Hopefully they will see this post and give some input. Paul Larson's Falls Flyer and Thunderhawks are desirable boats but I think the Thunderhawk has a bigger following. I like them. They have fins a big plus but they also have "Style" or at least I think so.

Another real nice 57 Larson Thunderhawk restored and owned by our friend Lee Wangstad.
Lee showed his boat on Lake Barkley in Kentucky at the ACBS Bluegrass Rendezvous back in 08.
We had about 20 classic boats and made a 70 mile cruise up the Cumberland River to the Confederate Fort Donelson in Tennessee. We were also fortunate to attend and see Lee’s presentation on classic non-wood boats of the Rocket Age.

Re:what am I looking at ?? 10 years 5 months ago #92737

I looked it over and negotiatons started...
he is stuck at 700
the motor is junk as is the trailer
it has been painted with house paint at some point
but the only thing that bothers me real bad is someone
put a piece of plywood between the transom and motor
and caulked it onto the outside of the transom and the glass is
cracked at the top of the transom...several wasp stings later
I told him I had to sleep on it.
is 700 too much for a hull ??
the rest is just junk.

Only you can make that call Jim, just depends on how bad you want it!

Have you tried laying 5 one hundred dollar bills in front of him? You'd be surprised what "flashing the cash" will do to motivate a seller. If you can get his wife there when you do this trick it can also help your offer, so I'm told....... :P

Yep to all that ^^^ but PARTICULARLY about having his Admiral present to force his hand. If she's there, I'd even consider starting at $350 ~ half price.

If you get the sense that it'd help, mention that you've spent some time looking into Thunderhawk history, and although you'd like to bring it back to all her glory, it's ROUGH currently & will take you a long time to do her justice. THEN come up to $425-450 & hope to settle on $500...

You could also mention: It could be a nice boat, but except to boat nerds, not many would be willing to do what's necessary to have it looking like Lee's posted above. That's going to take a great deal of work, time & money. As a closed bow, vintage runabout, it'll have appeal, but few buyers other then vintage boat collectors. Just don't let them know about us

Good luck, and if I only had 36hrs in a day, 8days a week, unlimited space to stockpile interesting, cool old boats, and access to unlimited funding..... :S My Admiral would bar me from the house, and I'd be living in a pole barn on 40acres w/ a mule :P

Good luck

You could spend $300-$400 for a FAR less desirable boat. I don't think $700 is all that exorbitant a price for that particular boat. At the end of the day you'll sit back and question your sanity for not spending a bit more. Did you see the Falls Flyer I posted yesterday? The guy is asking way over $2000 and it doesn't even come with a junk motor.

Re:what am I looking at ?? 10 years 5 months ago #92761

The way I look at it, if you CAN buy it for $350, why wouldn't you. If it was THE ONE boat he'd been looking for, it would already be headed to his garage. As a possible project rig likely to need extensive re-chroming and lots of work, the less upfront money the better. At $350, rather then $700, the savings covers 65% of a NEW re-popped windshield, or possibly 33% of the cost of some re-chrome work.

In the end, it doesn't really matter what anyone other then buyer & seller 'think' it's worth and whether those numbers are close enough to reach an agreement.

If $350 seems low, it is. But I also think for a junk trailer, junk motor, and a boat that requires replacement of possibly one-off parts & pieces, $700 is too high, to me anyway. I like the boat, I think it's interesting, it's likely you'd never see another, as a project or restored, and that's for sale, plus it will get lots of attention, but it's not my ONE.

And besides, it's only 1 guy's opinion based on little details & 3 limited pix.........

Re:what am I looking at ?? 10 years 5 months ago #92770

I offered 300 and the owner said he would put it on ebay before he would take that... I did take the Admiral with me last nite to see it (yes I know the tricks  ) and she liked the boat but was concerned about the "what ya can't see" in the transom and stringers in a boat full of trash water and 4" of moss growing in the floor. I jacked it up and partially drained it and the side to diside stringers sounded knocked good.
If I could buy it for 400 I probably would take the chance but not for 700...
For me it's a cool boat and potentially a small profit maker but as was said before...not the ONE.
I would give a hundred just for the junk motor for the one and only purpose of killing that damn wasp that got down my shirt and stitched me like a sewing machine !!!

my wife's lines of ..
"have you lost your mind"
and "are you nuts" ...always directed towards me...
usually drops the price quickly
They think she'll kill me if I take it home or want to see me beaten in thier driveway I guess

LOL! Whatever works. My take is that you may never see another one for sale, at least this affordable. If it's not "the one" for you then low ball him.

Re:what am I looking at ?? 10 years 5 months ago #92792

If you are up for doing a restoration, you are probably not going to find a cooler boat in that close proximity. The $700 is better than buying something for $400 and having to drive 1000 miles to get it.

Good luck!

I thought I recognized that Larson Thunderhawk. Sure enough this was as shown at the Geneva Lakes show way back in 2010.

I remember the owners name was Mick and he was with Lakeshore Marine in Chicago.

Now the clincher here was the neighboring boats. That’s Del’s 59 CarAqua and JAG’s 57 Arena Craft.
[

Mama Mia! was there too and like the Larson it finished in the also ran category. It’s tough competition when the likes of JAG and Del roll into town.

The Thunderhawk is one sweet looking classic boat and really gets a lot of attention out there.

So, .................
What are we waiting for?
Today is a great day to go back over there with seven (7) crisp $100 bills, start at 5 of them, and keep one in your other pocket, and one in your billfold. Do what you have to do to save it.

(And remember to talk him down do to the wheels and bearings for the trailer just to get it home.)

When I get back on this evening or tomorrow, and get back into this website, I would like to see that your secured the deal.

Regards,
StevieB

Re:what am I looking at ?? 10 years 5 months ago #92865

The Thunderhawks are neat boats, but they aren't rare by any means. I'll bet anyone a beer that if the boat is put on ebay that it won't bring his asking. If the trailer is junk and has no paper, and the boat doesn't have a title, then the guy will have a tough time selling it for his asking price. Unless desperate, let it sit for 6 months & ask again. All that said, if you like it & want it - just do it. But do it with this caveat - figure on the boat having rotted wood. Chances are better than not that the transom is well on it's way to being mush. If you go at it with that thought, you won't be upset by a rotted transom, and if it is good enough to use - then great. But seeing that someone put a sandwich plate on the back of the transom suggests that the wood is shot. Because the screws holding the plywood are not / were never sealed, pretty much guarantees that it needs a transom and likely more

I have decided to pass on this one ...it isn't MY ONE.
If anyone wants the owners contact details I will ask him if I can pass it on to you...
and if you get in a negotiation and want any detailed photos or anything in particular looked at...I drive by this boat twice a day...just let me know how I can help
